Television actor and digital content creator Sambhavna Seth, alongside her husband Avinash Dwivedi, recently intervened to rescue their domestic worker's elder sister from an ordeal in Kharghar, Navi Mumbai. The young woman had been trapped inside a residential property where she was subjected to forced labor, physical abuse, and severe emotional harassment. The couple shared video documentation of the incident on social media, drawing widespread attention to the plight of vulnerable domestic workers.
How the Exploitation Began in Kharghar
The crisis unfolded when Gudiya, who works as house help in Sambhavna Seth and Avinash Dwivedi's residence, burst into tears while performing her daily duties. Upon being asked about her distress, Gudiya revealed that her elder sister was stuck in a dangerous situation in Navi Mumbai's Kharghar locality. The sister had been recruited through a placement agency under the explicit agreement that her sole responsibility would be caring for 13 cats and 5 dogs. However, upon arrival, the employers forced her to handle all household chores, including cooking meals and cleaning the entire residence.
This forced labor condition was particularly hazardous because the woman had recently undergone a surgical procedure, rendering her physically incapable of handling heavy domestic work. When she expressed her desire to leave the employment due to her health conditions, the house owners flatly refused to permit her departure. Sambhavna Seth explained that during phone conversations, the sister wept profusely and shared that she was being systematically denied food for multiple days, causing a severe deterioration in her health.
Failed Negotiations and Confiscation of Identity Documents
Attempting to resolve the crisis peacefully, Sambhavna Seth and Avinash Dwivedi personally contacted the employers via phone. They offered to clear any financial disputes or outstanding dues in exchange for the woman's safe release. Despite these efforts, the employers refused to release her. To prevent her from escaping, the employers confiscated her identity proofs and hid her personal clothing. Additionally, they issued verbal threats to intimidate her into submission.
The Rescue Operation and Police Action
Recognizing the urgency of the situation, the couple coordinated with a local non-governmental organization (NGO), representatives from the recruitment agency, and a supportive female resident living in the same housing society. Together, they executed an intervention to free the woman from the property. During the rescue attempt, the employers physically assaulted the woman, inflicting physical injuries as she tried to break free.
Following the rescue, Sambhavna Seth and Avinash Dwivedi expressed strong frustration regarding the lack of immediate action by the local Kharghar police, noting that timely police intervention could have prevented the physical assault. Consequently, the couple took the victim to the Bangur Nagar Police Station in Mumbai, where law enforcement officials accepted the complaint, registered a formal First Information Report (FIR), and began gathering evidence. Gudiya expressed her deep gratitude toward the couple for saving her sister's life and urged authorities to take strict legal measures against the perpetrators.
