A major collaborative initiative named Khet Bachao Abhiyan is currently underway in Ghazipur to educate and train farmers on the critical importance of adopting organic and natural farming techniques. Amid rising concerns over the intensive use of chemical fertilizers and synthetic pesticides, which deplete soil vitality and pose severe health risks to consumers, multiple agricultural and government bodies have joined forces to champion sustainable alternatives and save agricultural land.
A Collaborative Push for Soil Preservation
This widespread awareness campaign is being run jointly by Krishi Vigyan Kendra Ghazipur, PG College Agriculture Department, Krishi Vigyan Kendra Ankushpur, the Horticulture Department, and the Fisheries Department. These institutions are working together to deliver practical knowledge to farmers, showing them how to transition to cost-effective, eco-friendly farming methods that do not rely on expensive chemical inputs.
Restoring Soil Vitality Through Crop Rotation
Dr. Omkar Singh, an agricultural expert from Krishi Vigyan Kendra Ghazipur, highlights that farmers should actively incorporate crop rotation into their seasonal schedules. This practice involves cultivating a variety of different crops across successive seasons rather than repeating the same crop on the same plot. Crop rotation naturally maintains the balance of essential nutrients in the soil while significantly reducing the prevalence of pests and crop-specific diseases.
Natural Nitrogen Boosters and Soil Enhancers
To keep the soil healthy in the long term, green manure and leguminous crops play an indispensable role. According to Dr. Singh, planting crops such as Dhaincha, Sanai, Urad, and Moong naturally enriches the soil with nitrogen. Utilizing these crops drastically lowers the requirement for synthetic urea, making farming more economical. Additionally, using traditional cow dung manure and vermicompost increases the level of organic carbon in the soil, which in turn activates beneficial microorganisms that are vital for maintaining natural fertility.
Eco-Friendly Alternatives for Pest and Disease Control
Instead of relying on toxic chemical pesticides, farmers are being encouraged to adopt botanical and natural alternatives. Utilizing plant-based deterrents made from hemp and castor helps manage pests efficiently without leaving harmful chemical residues on crops. Furthermore, for managing early-stage fungal diseases, a traditional diluted buttermilk solution can serve as an effective organic remedy. However, the precise ratio and method of applying buttermilk should be carried out under the guidance of agricultural experts.
Long-Term Health Benefits for Consumers and Ecosystems
The core objective of the Khet Bachao Abhiyan is to establish a sustainable farming ecosystem. Reducing the use of chemical fertilizers and synthetic pesticides preserves soil fertility and protects beneficial micro-flora. This transition directly benefits consumers as well, ensuring that the fruits, vegetables, and food grains arriving in markets are free from chemical residues, thereby promoting public health.
