The history of Nathupur village, located in the Sagri tehsil of Azamgarh district in Uttar Pradesh, is forever enshrined with the valor of a brave son who made the ultimate sacrifice in defense of the nation. During the Kargil War, 30 August 1999 arrived as a day of immense pride intertwined with deep tragedy for the residents of Nathupur. That day marked the 22nd birthday of soldier Ram Samujh Yadav. Battling fierce enemy forces under freezing alpine conditions, he demonstrated extraordinary bravery and achieved martyrdom while protecting India's borders. His supreme sacrifice continues to serve as an enduring symbol of patriotism and selfless national service for generations to come.
Growing Up Amid Hardship and the Calling to Serve
Ram Samujh Yadav was born into a family grappling with severe financial hardship and poverty. His family comprised his parents and three younger siblings. As the eldest son, the responsibility of supporting the household naturally fell upon his shoulders. Despite these challenging circumstances, he harbored a deep passion from childhood to wear the uniform of the Indian Army and serve the motherland. His drive to contribute to the nation pushed him to overcome every obstacle.
His dream materialized in 1996 when he was selected to join the Indian Army. After completing his recruitment process in Banaras, he was drafted into the 13 Kumaon Regiment. From the very beginning of his military career, he distinguished himself through exceptional discipline, bravery, and dedication. His younger brother, Pramod Yadav, shared that this intense devotion to national service continuously empowered him to face the toughest military assignments.
From the Heights of Siachen to the Frontlines of Kargil
Recognizing his courage and physical endurance, the military deployed Ram Samujh Yadav to the Siachen Glacier within just two years of his enlistment. Siachen, widely regarded as the highest and coldest battleground on Earth, presented sub-zero temperatures and severe blizzards. After successfully completing his challenging tenure on the glacier, his battalion descended to the plains and was posted in Chandigarh.
However, shortly after his arrival in Chandigarh, the Kargil War broke out following Pakistani intrusions. As national security was compromised, his unit was immediately dispatched to the warzone. Ram Samujh Yadav's battalion was entrusted with a critical and hazardous mission: recapturing and liberating Point 5685, one of the most strategic and inhospitable mountain features occupied by Pakistani infiltrators in Kargil.
Eliminating 21 Enemy Soldiers on His 22nd Birthday
On 30 August 1999, amidst bone-chilling sub-zero temperatures and treacherous rocky peaks, Ram Samujh Yadav and his fellow soldiers launched a daring assault on Point 5685. Displaying exceptional valor, the 22-year-old soldier stormed enemy fortifications and single-handedly eliminated 21 Pakistani infiltrators during intense close-quarter combat.
Having wiped out the enemy positions, he successfully hoisted the Indian Tricolor atop Point 5685, securing a decisive victory for the nation. However, during the fierce firefight, he sustained severe injuries. Due to critical battle wounds and heavy blood loss, he took his final breath on the very day of his 22nd birthday, laying down his life for India. His brother Pramod Yadav noted that losing the eldest son left the family devastated, with their mother and sister remaining in deep shock for several months.
Annual Commemoration and Present Family Support
Every year on 30 August, the residents of Nathupur gather to commemorate the martyrdom of Ram Samujh Yadav. A large memorial event known as the Shaheed Mela is organized in the village, drawing visitors from surrounding regions to pay their respects to the fallen hero. The annual gathering serves as a reminder of his heroic legacy for local youth.
Following his martyrdom, the Central Government provided financial assistance to his family under the welfare scheme established for the dependents of Kargil martyrs. As part of this support package, an LPG gas agency and agricultural land were allocated in the name of Ram Samujh Yadav's mother. Today, the family relies on the income generated from operating this gas agency for their livelihood. Pramod Yadav continues to reside in the village alongside his parents, preserving the proud legacy of his martyred brother.
