A key moment in this unfolding strategy occurred recently in Lucknow, when Swati Singh, who served as a Minister of State (Independent Charge) during the first term of the Yogi Adityanath-led government, held a significant meeting with Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. This courtesy visit has immediately caught the attention of political analysts, given that Swati Singh had largely maintained a low profile and distanced herself from active politics after being denied a ticket in the 2022 assembly elections. Her sudden re-emergence at the Chief Minister's residence has sparked intense debate over whether the BJP is formulating a plan to re-introduce her into the electoral arena for the 2027 polls, possibly from the Sarojini Nagar seat in Lucknow or a constituency in the Ballia district.
The Meteoric and Controversial Rise of Swati Singh
Swati Singh’s entry into mainstream politics was highly dramatic and shaped entirely by unforeseen circumstances. In 2016, her husband and prominent BJP leader, Dayashankar Singh, triggered a major political storm by making highly controversial remarks against Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) supremo Mayawati. In retaliation, BSP workers organized massive protests, during which they targeted Dayashankar Singh's mother and minor daughter, using highly offensive and abusive language. Faced with this severe family crisis, Swati Singh stepped into the public spotlight. She mounted a fierce defense of her family's honor, directly challenging the top leadership of the BSP on public and media platforms. Her fiery speeches and uncompromising stand resonated widely, granting her instant national media attention and public recognition as a strong leader.
Ministerial Tenure, Marital Discord, and the 2022 Ticket Cut
Recognizing her potential as a strong female voice, the BJP leadership appointed Swati Singh as the State President of the party's Mahila Morcha. She was subsequently fielded from the prestigious Sarojini Nagar assembly constituency in Lucknow during the 2017 elections. Swati Singh won the seat and was subsequently appointed as the Minister for Child Development and Women Welfare with Independent Charge in the first cabinet of Yogi Adityanath. However, her tenure was frequently overshadowed by both administrative controversies and personal disputes. Her relationship with her husband, Dayashankar Singh, deteriorated publicly, leading them to live separately, and their personal discord regularly made headlines in local and national media.
By the time the 2022 assembly elections arrived, the rift between the couple had created a political stalemate. Both Swati Singh and Dayashankar Singh staked strong claims for the party ticket from the same Sarojini Nagar seat. To resolve this public dispute and prevent any damage to the party's image, the BJP high command took a decisive step by denying tickets to both contenders. Instead, the party brought in Rajeshwar Singh, a former Joint Director of the Enforcement Directorate (ED), who won the seat with a substantial margin. To balance the equations, Dayashankar Singh was given a ticket from the Ballia constituency. He won that seat and currently serves as the Transport Minister (Independent Charge) in the state cabinet.
Strategic Significance of the Meeting Ahead of 2027
The recent meeting between Swati Singh and Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath is being viewed as much more than a routine courtesy visit. Following the passage of the landmark Nari Shakti Vandan Act in Parliament, the BJP is focusing heavily on projecting prominent women leaders in the run-up to the 2027 elections. Swati Singh’s reputation as an eloquent and aggressive orator makes her an asset in this regard. Furthermore, the Rajput-Thakur community remains a highly crucial voting demographic across the Awadh and Purvanchal regions of Uttar Pradesh. The party is keen to reactivate established faces like Swati Singh to consolidate this traditional support base.
Since Rajeshwar Singh has established a firm grip on the Sarojini Nagar seat, it is unlikely that Swati Singh will be fielded from there. Instead, political circles are buzzing with the possibility of her contesting from another seat in Lucknow or a district in Purvanchal. Alternatively, there is strong speculation about her being sent to the Legislative Council (MLC) or appointed to a key position such as the head of the State Women's Commission. Since Dayashankar Singh also shares a close equation with Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, the party has to carefully navigate their mutual dynamics. If only one of them is to be accommodated in active electoral politics, Dayashankar Singh currently holds a stronger position. Thus, finding an alternative administrative or legislative role for Swati Singh seems to be the most viable option. Overall, her meeting with the Chief Minister indicates that the BJP is systematically working to bring back its loyal, aggressive, and recognizable leaders to the forefront before the 2027 electoral battle begins.
