Bahraich and Fatehpur police departments in Uttar Pradesh have successfully tracked and recovered 332 lost and stolen mobile phones valued at more than ₹78 lakh as part of a targeted enforcement operation. Working closely with surveillance and cyber units, authorities processed the recovered devices through formal legal channels before organizing handovers to return the handsets to their legitimate owners.
Bahraich SOG Team Recovers 211 Handsets Valued at Over 58 Lakh
The Special Operation Group (SOG) in Bahraich district leveraged advanced digital surveillance and persistent field tracking across multiple police station jurisdictions. In total, the team successfully traced 211 missing mobile phones with an estimated cumulative market value of ₹58,25,300.
To complete the process, a formal event was convened at the Bahraich Police Lines, where the Superintendent of Police (SP) personally handed over the recovered mobile devices to the citizen owners. Receiving their missing devices brought immense relief and satisfaction to the affected citizens. In recognition of the technical expertise and dedication demonstrated during the operation, the Superintendent of Police announced a cash reward for the members of the Bahraich SOG unit.
Fatehpur Cyber and CCTNS Units Trace 121 Smartphones Worth 20 Lakh
A parallel enforcement drive in Fatehpur district yielded similar results, with law enforcement personnel recovering 121 stolen and misplaced smartphones worth approximately ₹20 lakh. Additional Superintendent of Police Gyan Prakash Rai explained that the recovery was achieved through seamless inter-departmental collaboration between the district cyber cell, Crime and Criminal Tracking Network & Systems (CCTNS) team, and local police station staff.
The ASP outlined the specific operational mechanism relying heavily on the Central Equipment Identity Register (CEIR) portal maintained under the Ministry of Home Affairs. Police units continuously monitor citizen complaints submitted through the CEIR platform. The moment an inactive or missing handset is powered back on or assigned a new user identity, automated triggers notify the cyber surveillance team, enabling swift location tracking and direct physical recovery by local teams.
Police Guidelines on Immediate Reporting and Data Protection
Following these major recoveries, senior police leadership across both districts issued important advisories encouraging citizens to act promptly whenever a device is lost or stolen. Officials cautioned against neglecting or delaying reports, emphasizing that immediate notification significantly improves tracking speed and success rates for cyber and surveillance teams.
Victims of phone theft or loss are advised to immediately report the incident at their nearest police station to lodge a formal First Information Report (FIR) or register an online complaint directly on the official CEIR portal. Prompt registration allows law enforcement to register the International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) number on central blacklists.
Once blocked on the CEIR portal, the lost device becomes virtually unusable for unauthorized individuals. Furthermore, as soon as anyone attempts to insert a new SIM card into the blocked handset, real-time alert systems push the precise location updates to tracking officers. This automated framework not only maximizes the probability of device retrieval but also safeguards sensitive personal data and stored files from potential cyber exploitation.
