Air pollution and toxic dust choking Kanpur will now be monitored using artificial intelligence-based sensors as the industrial city grapples with worsening environmental conditions. In the recently released Swachh Vayu Sarvekshan 2026 rankings issued at the central level, Kanpur slipped sharply from fifth straight to 11th place, raising serious questions about the administrative efficiency of the Municipal Corporation. The dust and particulate matter that local residents have been continuously complaining about are now formally acknowledged by municipal officials as a major driving force behind the spike in pollution.
Road dust and construction push Kanpur down the rankings
Municipal Commissioner Arpit Upadhyay acknowledged that dust kicking up from unpaved or poorly maintained roads and rampant construction work have severely impacted air quality. To tackle this crisis, the civic body has partnered with Eravat Foundation, an organization associated with IIT Kanpur, to overhaul the monitoring framework. Under this collaborative initiative, over 150 low-cost air quality sensors are being deployed at strategic locations across the city. These sensors will quickly provide officials with precise real-time data indicating which specific intersections or neighborhoods are experiencing high pollution levels and what factors are causing them.
Automated alerts for civic officials upon pollution spikes
Representatives of Eravat Foundation explained that pollution trends will be tracked closely using data streaming directly from these sensors. If garbage is detected being burned in the open or excessive dust is generated at a specific site, automated notifications will immediately reach officials in the relevant departments. This quick dissemination of information is expected to facilitate timely interventions and help control pollution before it worsens. The civic body has also launched a dedicated portal where daily air quality data will be publicly displayed. Municipal Commissioner Arpit Upadhyay stated that concerted efforts are underway to significantly improve the ground situation within the next three to four months. The supporting foundation has previously worked on improving air quality metrics in several other major urban centers, including Lucknow and Delhi.
Fluctuations in Kanpur air quality index over six years
According to data compiled by the Pollution Control Board, Kanpur recorded an average Air Quality Index of 149 in the year 2020. The reading stood at 150 in 2021, dropped to 133 in 2022, and settled at 118 across both 2023 and 2024. However, the index climbed back up to 138 in 2025, marking a renewed deterioration in the city's overall air health last year. Ongoing road development and sewage construction projects across multiple city zones have compounded the dust problem. Essential building materials lying exposed on major thoroughfares, debris left uncovered, and a lack of water sprinkling at construction sites have severely aggravated the situation. In numerous areas, construction work continues without protective green netting, while the burning of waste in the open releases thick, toxic smoke into the atmosphere.
Understanding air quality index categories
An AQI reading between zero and 50 is classified as good, 51 to 100 as satisfactory, 101 to 200 as moderate, 201 to 300 as poor, 301 to 400 as very poor, and 401 to 500 as severe. The Municipal Corporation maintains that the deployment of these novel sensors and enhanced surveillance mechanisms will pinpoint pollution sources accurately and accelerate punitive and corrective actions.
