Commuters travelling across the Rohilkhand belt of western Uttar Pradesh are set to get a major public transport upgrade ahead of the festive season. The Uttar Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (UPSRTC) is preparing to introduce 30 new eco-friendly electric buses in the Bareilly region under its initial phase. Roadways officials aim to roll out these modern e-buses before the upcoming festival of Diwali. To ensure smooth, comfortable, and pollution-free transit, the regional roadways office has finalized a detailed route plan covering eight key inter-district corridors and submitted it to headquarters for final approval.
Increased Bus Allocation and Route Distribution
Providing details on the project, Bareilly Roadways Regional Manager Mohammad Azim stated that the headquarters had initially sanctioned 25 electric buses for the Bareilly region. However, evaluating the high passenger volume and growing transit requirements of the zone, the total allotment was subsequently revised upward to 30 buses. The selected routes have been mapped out keeping in mind local commuter demands and regional connectivity requirements.
As per the proposed operational blueprint, the fleet of 30 electric buses will be distributed across eight specific routes. The allocation includes operating 3 buses on the Bareilly-Moradabad route, 5 buses on the Bareilly-Haldwani route, and 5 buses on the Bareilly-Badaun corridor. Furthermore, 3 buses will serve the Bareilly-Aonla-Manona Dham route. Additionally, 3 buses have been allocated for the Bareilly-Pilibhit line, 3 buses for Bareilly-Bisalpur, 3 buses for Bareilly-Shahjahanpur, and 5 buses for the Bareilly-Chandausi route.
Charging Infrastructure Under Construction
To support the uninterrupted operation of these battery-powered vehicles, robust charging infrastructure is being established at three key locations across the region. A dedicated charging station has already been completed and readied at the Badaun depot workshop. Meanwhile, preparations are underway to construct charging facilities at the old Bareilly bus station. Additionally, a new charging station is being set up inside the workshop of the under-construction modern bus terminal at Izzatnagar to service the expanding fleet.
Cutting Operational Costs and Curbing Emissions
At present, the four major depots under the Bareilly region—Bareilly, Rohilkhand, Badaun, and Pilibhit—collectively operate a fleet of more than 600 buses. The vast majority of these existing vehicles run on conventional diesel. Against the backdrop of escalating diesel prices, integrating zero-emission electric buses into the network is projected to significantly lower fuel expenditure and routine vehicle maintenance costs for the corporation. Simultaneously, the deployment of e-buses will help mitigate vehicular pollution and reduce carbon emissions across the region.
Fleet Rollout Expected Upon Delivery
Roadways officials indicated that the exact technical specifications and passenger amenities of the new buses will be formally detailed once guidelines arrive from the state headquarters. Nevertheless, authorities emphasized that passenger comfort and safety remain top priorities in the new design. Regional Manager Mohammad Azim confirmed that regular operations on all eight sanctioned routes will commence as soon as the physical delivery of the 30 buses is received from headquarters, providing commuters in Bareilly, Badaun, Pilibhit, Shahjahanpur, and Moradabad with modern, eco-friendly transit options.
