A tragic incident has unfolded in Medinipur, West Bengal, where a worker associated with the Bharatiya Janata Party lost his life following a brutal thrashing amid a violent clash. The deceased has been identified as 32-year-old Shamsher Biswas. The violent altercation broke out on Saturday morning in the Hathihalkar area of rural Medinipur, escalating rapidly into physical violence.
Hospitalized in Critical Condition
Immediately following the attack, the grievously injured Shamsher Biswas was pulled out from the spot and rushed in critical condition to the Medinipur Medical College Hospital. However, upon arrival, the attending doctors examined him and declared him dead. The sudden demise sent shockwaves through the entire neighborhood.
Internal Factional Dispute Within Party Ranks
According to local sources, the fatal incident stemmed from an ongoing dispute between rival factions within the party itself. Tensions had been simmering between older members and newer recruits of the organization. During this internal strife, members of the opposing faction launched a sudden assault on Shamsher and a few others.
Official Stance from Leadership and Police
Commenting on the development, District BJP President Soumen Tiwari stated that the exact sequence of events leading up to the tragedy is currently being probed. Authorities noted that no formal complaint has been registered with the police yet. Nevertheless, law enforcement officials assured that strict legal action will follow once a complaint is filed and investigated.
Previous Killing of a BJP Worker in Newtown
Political violence in the state is not isolated to this single event. Earlier this year in May, another BJP worker was cornered and killed in Newtown, West Bengal. In that incident, a worker named Madhu Mandal was putting up party flags a few kilometers from his home following a BJP victory.
Dispute Over Flag Hoisting
The earlier altercation in Newtown began when Madhu Mandal was erecting the party flag and got into a verbal argument with a local worker named Kamal, who was affiliated with the Trinamool Congress. Although the heated exchange had temporarily fizzled out and the matter appeared to be settled at the time, the underlying tension remained.
Tragic End After Stoning Incident
However, Madhu Mandal was subsequently lured back to the same location through a phone call. Allegations surfaced that local miscreants backed by the ruling party cornered him and began pelting stones at him. He was rushed to the hospital in critical condition, where doctors declared him dead. The incident triggered widespread panic, prompting local residents and neighbors to stage intense protests that required deployment of police and CRPF personnel to restore order.
