A tragic weekend outing turned fatal for a college student who decided to enter the waters of the Manjhra dam located in Kashkuli under the Baraboni block of Asansol in West Bengal. The body of the 20-year-old engineering student was successfully pulled out from the water on Monday morning, sending shockwaves through the entire neighborhood. The victim was identified as Supriyo Chakraborty, who studied at a private engineering college situated in Durgapur. Warnings issued regarding the high water levels in the dam were reportedly ignored prior to the accident.
Ignored Warnings Led to the Tragedy
According to available details, Supriyo Chakraborty arrived at the Kashkuli dam along with around six of his classmates on Sunday, September 27, after 3 pm. Local residents had explicitly warned the group of students against stepping into the dam's deep waters. Despite these safety cautions, the youngsters entered the reservoir anyway. During the swim, Supriyo suddenly drifted into deep water and submerged.
Intensive Search Operation Recovers Body
Immediate search operations could not be carried out on Sunday evening due to fast-falling darkness. On Monday morning, local police, civil defense units, and a specialized rescue team launched a coordinated search operation in the dam. Following hours of rigorous effort, the team located and recovered Supriyo's body from the water. Police subsequently transferred the deceased to the Asansol district hospital for a post-mortem examination and initiated necessary investigations into the incident.
Only Son of His Parents
Family sources revealed that Supriyo was the only son of his grieving parents. His father, Divyendu Chakraborty, works as a businessman in Asansol, while his mother serves as a schoolteacher in Kulti. The local authorities are continuing to examine the circumstances surrounding the fatal mishap.
Previous Drowning Incidents in the Region
Water-related tragedies are not unprecedented in the area. Earlier in June, three class 10 students lost their lives after drowning in a river within the Disergarh area under the jurisdiction of Asansol's Kulti police station. Reports indicated that eight students from a private English-medium school in Niamatpur had skipped classes on a Saturday and were consequently denied entry to the school on Monday. The group then went to play cricket in a ground near the river in Disergarh, where three of them entered the water to bathe and subsequently drowned despite rescue efforts.
