Kolkata Police have dismissed allegations claiming an attempted knife attack on West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, stating that the formal complaint lacks substance. The Kolkata Police Commissioner clarified that the accusations are completely groundless, following claims that an armed woman tried to target the Chief Minister on her way to a Durga Puja pandal.
The Allegations and Security Breach Concerns
According to claims raised on Tuesday, the incident reportedly occurred while Mamata Banerjee was traveling to inaugurate or visit a Durga Puja pandal. It was alleged that an individual managed to get dangerously close to the Chief Minister, addressed her familiarly as aunt, grabbed her saree, and attempted to pull out a knife. Because the Chief Minister is covered under Z-plus category security, the alleged breach immediately triggered political concern and widespread attention.
Police Findings and Identity of the Detained Woman
Reviewing the incident, the Kolkata Police Commissioner announced that an examination of the complaint revealed no merit in the claims of an assault. The woman taken into custody was identified as Tannishtha Saha. Police officials noted that the detained individual appeared to be struggling with substance addiction and had falsely claimed to be the Chief Minister's niece while attempting to approach the convoy.
Investigation and Security Protocols
Following the incident, law enforcement officers detained the woman on the spot to ascertain how she managed to enter the perimeter despite heightened security. Officials indicated that the woman appeared erratic and intoxicated, and thorough checks revealed that the narrative of a coordinated armed attack was entirely unfounded.
