Indian jazz guitarist and composer Pritesh Walia has been released on bond after spending two weeks in the custody of United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement. The Delhi-born musician was initially taken into custody on August 2 upon landing at Los Angeles International Airport, after which immigration authorities transferred him to the Adelanto ICE Processing Center located in California. Although Walia is now out on bond, his legal immigration proceedings remain active in the United States system. Following his release from the detention facility, the musician took to Instagram to share a heartfelt video message expressing his deep gratitude to his family members, close friends, and the global jazz community for standing by him during the ordeal.
Uncertainty and Mental Strain During Detention
In his emotional social media address, Walia reflected candidly on the emotional toll exacted by his two-week confinement, characterizing those fourteen days as the most challenging period of his entire life. Separated from his loved ones and facing total uncertainty regarding his legal future, he described experiencing severe anxiety, frustration, and emotional exhaustion. He noted that inside a federal detention facility, a person's physical and mental world shrinks dramatically, making it extremely easy to lose all sense of hope. Walia admitted that there were several moments during his incarceration when he found himself giving up hope before finally securing his release on bond.
Musical Journey from New Delhi to Prominent American Institutions
Born and raised in New Delhi, Walia began his formal training in Indian classical music at the age of 13. Driven by a desire to pursue advanced musical education, he subsequently relocated to the United States. His academic journey includes earning an Associate degree from the Musicians Institute in Los Angeles, followed by a Bachelor's degree from the prestigious Berklee College of Music, and culminating in a Master's degree from the New England Conservatory. Since 2019, Walia has resided and worked in the US under an O1B visa, a specialized visa category reserved for individuals with extraordinary ability in the arts. This visa is initially granted for a three-year term and can be extended in one-year increments up to a total of three additional years. According to an official statement issued by ICE, Walia was required to depart the United States by 2025.

Walia's legal struggle comes on the heels of major health setbacks that began in 2023. During that year, the guitarist developed severe medical symptoms, including intense vertigo, dissociation, vision distortion known as oscillopsia, blurred sight, and significant loss of physical balance. Specialist evaluations resulted in diagnoses of Persistent Postural-Perceptual Dizziness (PPPD), Idiopathic Intracranial Hypertension (IIH), and chronic vestibular migraine. To manage these chronic neurological conditions, Walia has been undergoing an intensive medical treatment plan that combines rigorous physical therapy, cognitive-behavioral therapy, and a carefully structured daily medication schedule.

Despite his ongoing medical and legal hurdles, Walia has maintained an active artistic output. On July 31, he released his new album titled 'Journey To Nowhere', featuring the Henry Godfrey Jazz Orchestra alongside featured guest artists Aaron Parks, Jerry Bergonzi, and Godwin Louis. His creative momentum was also highlighted in DownBeat magazine by writer Bill Milkowski, who praised Walia's pivotal 2024 releases with an organ-trio setup alongside keyboardist Sharik Hasan and drummer Avery Logan.
