As screens fill with endless streams of automated digital distractions, competitive mental gaming is staging a quiet comeback. Stepping squarely into this shift, India-based puzzle startup Matiks has closed a fresh $10 million pre-Series A financing round. The investment was spearheaded by global venture capital firm General Catalyst, alongside participation from Indian entrepreneur Ronnie Screwvala. Existing backers InfoEdge Ventures, Tanglin Venture Partners, and Untitled Ventures also returned for this funding cycle, pushing the company's total external capital past $13.5 million.
Roots in Competitive Mental Math
The startup was formed by Sudhanshu Bhatia, Mohan Kumar, and Sushant Timmapur, who first crossed paths as college classmates. Bhatia previously competed in mental calculation championships and began formulating the concept while designing anti-money laundering strategies during his tenure at American Express. He recognized an untapped appetite for competitive mental sports that traditional entertainment channels were failing to satisfy.
Addressing the current state of consumer entertainment, Bhatia said, "For the last 10 years, the platforms have made entertainment consumption easy, but much of it is brain slop." Driven by his background in competitive calculations, he realized that identical enthusiasm existed for puzzles and memory challenges, prompting the team to engineer head-to-head formats reminiscent of athletic events.
Rapid User Growth and Core Mechanics
Although the platform has been in operation for two years, it experienced an extraordinary acceleration over recent months. Daily active players stood around 22,000 at the start of the year before climbing to over 300,000 by September. During that same month, monthly active users reached 2.2 million, validating the product's sudden rise in appeal across digital app stores.
Inside the interface, players navigate four distinct disciplines: Math, Puzzle, Memory, and Logic. Users can practice against automated bots to refine their technique before entering head-to-head matches against human competitors. The app incorporates progressive quests and regular challenges, allowing players to accrue points, preserve daily activity streaks, and unlock advanced gameplay tiers. Rounds are deliberately condensed into quick, multi-minute engagements, free from abrasive advertising pop-ups or heavy-handed monetisation prompts.
Monetisation Testing and Global Localization
Having prioritized community growth during its early phase, the startup recently initiated trials for a paid subscription tier. This membership unlocks diagnostic performance analysis, practical gaming tips, tailored practice modules, and exclusive capabilities. In addition, players can opt for microtransactions to skip demanding milestones, sustain daily streaks, or accelerate their XP totals.
While domestic players in India account for the vast majority of current volume, interest has increasingly emerged from the United States, Japan, and South Korea. To capitalize on overseas curiosity, the company aims to roll out targeted localization packages specifically tailored for Japanese and South Korean audiences. Backed by an operational team of 41 full-time staff, the fresh funding will finance regional growth across these strategic overseas territories.
Venturing Into User-Created Games
Even as Matiks positions its core catalogue as an antidote to mindless feed consumption, the company is not shunning artificial intelligence entirely. The startup has unveiled an experimental creation suite named Jelo, enabling everyday users to construct custom puzzles that can be played across the network. The initiative steps into an increasingly active niche where technology heavyweights, including Google with its experimental Playground suite, are exploring software-assisted game generation.
Expressing confidence in the company's momentum, General Catalyst partner Rahul Humayun stated, "We found the Matiks vision, product, and most importantly the community to be truly N of 1." He emphasized that sustained engagement across diverse touchpoints, including real-time duels, community feeds, Snac, and interactive authoring tools, serves as an encouraging indicator for commercial expansion ahead.
