Social media platform TikTok faced repeated warnings from its own staff regarding the severe risks the application posed to children, according to court records. The newly surfaced documents indicate deep internal frustration among workers over how executives handled urgent warnings concerning child safety, which included risks of sexual exploitation and exposure to self-harm content.
Depositions from employees filed in March 2026 have brought fresh scrutiny to the platform's internal child safety protocols and decision-making processes. According to the records, workers warned that minors were appearing in explicit sexual content available for purchase directly on the platform, raising major alarms that the company could indirectly profit from potentially unlawful activities. Additionally, staff flagged that underage users were successfully exploiting technical loopholes to bypass age-restriction filters and conceal their online activity from parents and guardians.
Furthermore, the court files reveal that company leadership deliberately chose not to conduct age-verification surveys of its user base out of concern that the findings would have to be handed over to regulatory authorities. This reluctance to assess user demographics added to the growing unease among internal teams who felt their safety warnings were being sidelined by top management in favor of growth and engagement metrics.
Addressing the allegations, a company spokesperson stated that the citations were selectively chosen at the behest of trial lawyers to mislead the public. The representative emphasized that the organization has invested billions of dollars into Trust and Safety initiatives while rolling out numerous preset security controls for teens, such as Family Pairing. Despite these defenses, the company continues to grapple with intense legal pressure.
The platform, along with other major tech giants like Meta, Google, and Snap, is currently confronting hundreds of consolidated federal lawsuits alleging that their apps cause direct harm to minors and that they concealed these known risks. While TikTok has managed to settle several cases out of court, ongoing legal battles continue to highlight the severe scrutiny facing the industry regarding youth safety.
