Digital streaming platform Spotify announced on Wednesday that it is rolling out audiobook access to more than 180 markets globally, reaching audiences across Europe, the Americas, the Caribbean, the Middle East, Africa, and Asia. The deployment started on Wednesday and is scheduled to progress over the upcoming months. Through this broad international release, over 750 million users will gain access to audiobooks, positioning Spotify to challenge both dedicated audiobook services like Audible and standard music streaming competitors.
Transition From English-Speaking Markets to a Multilingual Library
Prior to this launch, the streaming service had restricted audiobook availability largely to German listeners and primary English-speaking territories, including the U.S., the U.K., Ireland, Australia, and New Zealand. With the current expansion, the platform has assembled over 350,000 titles specifically for its new territories, boosting its broader catalog to cover more than 120 languages. In Spain, for instance, users can now browse through a collection of more than 45,000 Spanish-language titles.
To build out diverse selections across international regions, Spotify is collaborating with over 300 publishers worldwide, including prominent houses such as Planeta and Mondadori.
Access Tiers, Stand-Alone Subscriptions, and Student Add-Ons
In designated markets such as Brazil, Mexico, Colombia, Poland, Chile, Norway, and Peru, Premium plan members receive an allocation of 12 hours of audiobook listening time. Listeners globally can also purchase a dedicated Audiobook+ stand-alone subscription, which provides a 15-hour listening allotment. In addition, users have the option to buy individual titles outright without an active subscription package.
In November, the company intends to introduce an Audiobook+ add-on option for student subscriptions in select territories. Since debuting last year, the Audiobook+ tier has attracted more than 1 million subscribers and generated over 100 million in annual recurring revenue for the business.
Product Innovations and Growing Engagement Numbers
In February, the service introduced Page Match, an interactive utility that enables listeners to scan a physical printed page to locate the identical listening spot inside the audiobook. The company recorded that 1 million people make use of this scanning tool every month. Platform metrics indicate that over the preceding year, monthly audiobook listeners grew by 40%, accompanied by a 30% jump in total hours spent listening.
To assist discovery, Spotify released Audiobook Charts this year to display trending titles. The platform also made available an AI-powered production tool that leverages ElevenLabs models to help authors convert written manuscripts into spoken audiobooks. Alongside digital formats, the company began testing physical book sales through its application in select markets like the U.S. and the U.K.
