Law enforcement authorities in Arunachal Pradesh have apprehended a multi-tasking staff member attached to the Tawang Post Office in connection with the alleged misappropriation of government funds totaling Rs 39.25 lakh. The arrest follows a formal complaint lodged by postal department officials, initiating a rigorous criminal investigation into the financial irregularities uncovered at the facility.
Discovery of Financial Discrepancies
The alleged embezzlement came to light on September 7 during a routine financial verification conducted at the Tawang Post Office. The internal audit reportedly uncovered significant discrepancies within the institutional accounts, prompting immediate administrative concern. Following these findings, Inspector of Post Office for the Bomdila Postal Sub Division, H Nilamai Singh, filed a formal written complaint with the local police on September 13.
Breakdown of Unaccounted Funds
According to the official police complaint, the accused individual failed to account for a staggering Rs 39.25 lakh by the deadline of September 10. A substantial portion of this sum, amounting to Rs 34.49 lakh, was allegedly collected as premiums under the Postal Life Insurance and Rural Postal Life Insurance schemes between January 1, 2023, and May 31, 2024. Investigators noted that these funds were neither deposited into the designated government accounts nor produced despite repeated reminders issued by postal authorities. Furthermore, the complaint highlighted that Rs 4.75 lakh in counter cash remained completely unremitted.
Custody and Ongoing Investigation
Tawang Superintendent of Police Tasi Darang confirmed that the suspect was taken into custody on September 14 after necessary legal formalities were concluded. Postal officials further indicated that the woman acknowledged the fund shortage during preliminary questioning and submitted a written undertaking admitting to the irregularities, as detailed in a report. The legal proceedings and subsequent inquiries are currently being conducted under the direct supervision of station officer N Angu as police work to determine the full scope of the financial breach.
