During the monsoon and rainy seasons, the appearance of snakes in lush green areas and gardens is a common occurrence in many regions. Particularly around educational institutions and residential neighborhoods, spotting venomous reptiles creates an atmosphere of fear and panic among children, parents, and local residents. Ajay Agarwal, who runs the Chlorophyll Play School near Maharana Pratap Chowk in the city, faced this exact ordeal about 15 years ago. Today, he successfully deters snakes from his premises by utilizing the natural properties of the Rauvolfia Serpentina plant.
Initial Reliance on Carbolic Acid Sprays
Roughly a decade and a half ago, snakes were frequently spotted inside the school grounds whenever the rainy season arrived. Because the campus featured a large number of trees, plants, and gardens, parents, teachers, and children were constantly worried about the potential danger. To combat this recurring issue, Agarwal initially resorted to spraying harsh chemical substances such as carbolic acid across the premises. While these chemical treatments kept the reptiles away for brief periods, the effect was never permanent, forcing him to look for a more sustainable solution.
Establishing a Living Barrier of Rauvolfia Serpentina
During his search for a better remedy, Agarwal learned about the Rauvolfia Serpentina plant and its distinct characteristics. Around 15 years ago, he planted approximately 18 of these saplings in the school garden. Over time, these original plants produced seeds and new shoots, resulting in dozens of thriving plants spread across the entire campus today. He strategically placed these plants all along the outer boundary walls of the institution, referring to the setup as his campus security barrier. According to him, cultivating these plants around the perimeter has virtually eliminated snake sightings inside the school grounds ever since.
Growing Plants in Waste Coconut Shells for the Community
Agarwal explains that the distinct aroma emitted by the Rauvolfia Serpentina plant acts as a natural repellent, keeping snakes at a distance. Building on this practical experience, he has launched a small initiative to encourage ordinary citizens to grow the plant around their own homes. He prepares new saplings inside discarded coconut shells and regularly distributes them to people in need. He notes that residents living near dense foliage, bushes, or gardens where snakes frequently emerge during the monsoons can greatly benefit from growing this greenery. His overarching goal extends beyond protecting his own school; he aims to raise public awareness about safe, natural methods to keep homes secure from wildlife.
