A devastating airstrike launched by Myanmar's military near a crowded commercial market in the western state of Rakhine has claimed the lives of at least 49 people. Fighter Jet Drops Two Bombs on Kyauktaw Township
The aerial assault occurred on Monday during midday hours in Kyauktaw township, a strategic location situated roughly 340 kilometers (210 miles) west of Mandalay, the second-largest city in Myanmar. Kyauktaw is currently administered and controlled by the Arakan Army, an influential ethnic armed movement operating in Rakhine. According to reports regarding the incident, a military jet released two bombs in close proximity to the local marketplace, directly impacting roadside vendors, routine shoppers, and pedestrians passing through the busy area.
Critical Injuries Reported Among Victims at Central Trade Hub
A statement issued by the Arakan Army early Tuesday detailed that among the 58 injured victims, at least 22 remain in critical medical condition. A senior rescue official operating in Rakhine, Wai Hun Aung, verified the casualty numbers after receiving field assessments from first responders stationed at the blast site. Wai Hun Aung pointed out that the facility functioned as a primary wholesale trade hub for the entire district, drawing merchants and commercial buyers from across the state on a regular basis. He noted that the bombing ranks among the absolute deadliest aerial attacks ever documented within Rakhine.
Arakan Army Pledges Decisive Retaliation
In response to the carnage, the Arakan Army issued a strong warning promising swift counteractions. The group announced that it would soon launch effective retaliatory operations against the individuals and entities directly responsible for orchestrating deliberate aerial strikes against civilian populations. The pledge has raised fears of an even sharper military escalation across Rakhine, where clashes between armed ethnic fighters and regime troops have intensified over recent months.
