Guwahati witnessed a grim road safety toll during the recent Durga Puja celebrations as collisions and mishaps across the city claimed nine lives and left 105 individuals injured between October 16 and October 21.
Hospital Data and Patient Demographics
Figures released from the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) indicate that a cumulative total of 114 accident victims sought medical assistance at the facility throughout the six-day timeframe, with nine individuals subsequently succumbing to their severe trauma. Among the total casualties treated, 67 were identified as male and 15 as female, while the available records did not specify the gender breakdown for the remaining patients. Medical assessments revealed that roughly 20 percent of those admitted were in critical condition and required ongoing intensive care.
Two-Wheeler Risks and Overall Accident Trends
A significant portion of these incidents involved two-wheeled vehicles, highlighting the distinct vulnerabilities faced by riders navigating congested festive traffic. Despite the tragic loss of life, overall traffic incident numbers in the city reportedly dropped by 15 percent when compared against figures from the matching timeframe in the previous year.
Official Reactions and Safety Concerns
These developments underscored persistent challenges regarding transit safety during major celebrations when heavy pedestrian and vehicular movement places immense strain on municipal infrastructure. Reacting to the situation, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma voiced serious apprehension regarding fatal collisions across the state throughout the festive window. In statements to journalists, he pointed out accident-prone corridors, active infrastructure renovation zones, and reckless driving habits as critical areas demanding immediate attention. Sarma noted that while certain zones showed improvement, locations undergoing road reconstruction remained troubling, and confirmed that authorities are actively mapping hazard points to implement corrective measures.
