Judicial authorities have remanded 34-year-old businessman Ghanakanta Gogoi to judicial custody following the completion of his seven-day police interrogation period in connection with the fatal mass shooting at Hotel Bilas Inn in Guwahati. Police produced Gogoi before the local court on November 3 after his remand period ended, choosing not to request any additional days of custodial detention for questioning.
The Commercial Lease Dispute Behind the Violence
Preliminary findings gathered by law enforcement officials show that the deadly confrontation originated from deep-seated disagreements regarding the management and lease agreement of the hospitality venue. The property-owning Bharali family had formally leased the Bora Service establishment to Gogoi on September 10, 2025, setting up a five-year agreement with a scheduled monthly rental fee of approximately Rs 1.8 lakh. Friction between the two parties quickly mounted once Gogoi carried out renovation work across the premises, igniting disputes over its intended operational purpose and the availability of specific facilities.
To resolve their persistent differences, both sides arranged a face-to-face settlement meeting at the hotel on October 26. However, verbal sparring erupted prior to the formal start of talks, rapidly devolving into a physical scuffle. It was during this physical fight that Gogoi allegedly opened fire on six people present in the room.
Victims from the Bharali Family and Surviving Driver
The barrage of gunfire claimed five lives, devastating the Bharali household by killing four family members alongside a domestic worker. The deceased co-owners have been identified as 58-year-old Helena Bharali and her 65-year-old brother Bhudev Bharali. The attack also killed Helena's 39-year-old son Debarshi Kashyap, his 30-year-old wife Rinika Kashyap, and 48-year-old family employee Narayan Das.
A family-employed driver, Satyendra Pathak, sustained bullet injuries during the rampage but managed to survive the assault.
SIT Probe, Weapon Recovery, and Crime Scene Reconstruction
Responding officers took Gogoi into custody within an hour of the shooting. During follow-up procedures, investigators confiscated a licensed.32-bore pistol believed to be the weapon used to carry out the killings. To ensure a thorough and methodical inquiry, authorities established a six-member Special Investigation Team under the leadership of Joint Commissioner of Police Ankur Jain, tasked with scrutinizing forensic traces, examining witness testimony, and analyzing every surrounding circumstance.
On November 2, heavily armed police personnel escorted Gogoi back to Hotel Bilas Inn to perform a full crime scene reconstruction. Investigators relied on dummy bodies and a fake firearm to map out the precise chain of movements and firing angles. Officers have also seized the formal arms documentation for the handgun and brought Gogoi's wife, Junmoni Gogoi, in for questioning as the probe continues to piece together the entire tragedy.
