Assam is once again experiencing a critical flood situation as persistent monsoon spells continue to inundate multiple regions across the state. According to the latest assessment published by the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), the recent wave of flooding has impacted more than 25,000 residents, disrupting normal life and jeopardizing livelihoods across several rural and suburban stretches.
Affected Districts and Emergency Relief Operations
Official data indicates that 25,083 individuals living in 155 villages are currently affected by inundation. The disaster has spread across seven districts, namely Goalpara, Sivasagar, Biswanath, Nagaon, Morigaon, West Karbi Anglong, and Cachar. To provide emergency shelter to displaced families, authorities have set up 13 functional relief camps. Local district administrations alongside emergency response units remain actively deployed in executing relief activities and monitoring safety across inundated areas.
Rising Casualties and Substantial Agricultural Damage
The latest spell of heavy inundation tragically claimed one life in West Karbi Anglong district. This casualty brings Assam's cumulative flood-related death toll to 108 for the current year. Beyond human loss, the floodwaters have severely disrupted the agrarian economy by submerging roughly 6,477.31 hectares of active agricultural land. The widespread destruction of standing crops poses severe economic concerns for farming communities dependent on harvest yields. Field officials are actively evaluating property losses and damage to residential houses.
Critical River Water Levels and Ongoing Alert
Hydrological monitoring shows that key rivers in the state continue to swell dangerously. Specifically, the Dhansiri river at Numaligarh and the Katakhal river at Matizuri have surpassed their respective danger thresholds. Authorities are strictly watching low-lying vulnerable locations as fluctuating water flows could worsen regional flooding. Response teams remain on high alert to respond swiftly to any sudden changes in water levels.
