A large demonstration is scheduled to take place in Guwahati on September 23 to demand comprehensive financial assistance and rehabilitation for communities battered by recent inundations across Upper Assam. The call for mobilization was issued by Sivasagar MLA and Raijor Dal president Akhil Gogoi, who stressed that families suffering from severe property destruction require urgent government intervention.
Gathering at Chachal from 10 AM
The demonstration will be staged at Chachal starting at 10 am, bringing together affected residents from Sivasagar, Jorhat, and Charaideo districts alongside regional supporters. Organizers confirmed that formal permission from relevant authorities has already been secured to conduct the assembly, which is designed to highlight ongoing post-disaster grievances in an organized manner.
Demand for Rs 10 Lakh Relief and CBI Investigation
Central to the list of demands presented by the organizers is the immediate provision of financial compensation amounting to Rs 10 lakh for each household that lost its dwelling and personal belongings in the disaster. Gogoi pointed out that relief distribution on the ground has been marred by irregularities, preventing state aid from reaching all eligible families. In addition to universal financial relief, the group is calling for an independent inquiry by the Central Bureau of Investigation into the factors that triggered the severe flooding across the region.
Warning of Escalated Demonstrations
Addressing the civic responsibility of political organizations during crises, Gogoi emphasized:
“The main work of a political party is to remain directly connected with the people.”He added that after the devastation in Upper Assam, the priority remains standing firmly beside displaced communities and providing every possible assistance.
The legislator issued a firm warning that Raijor Dal will expand and intensify its agitation if the government continues to overlook their demands following the September 23 event. This planned mass gathering follows a previous one-day hunger strike observed by Gogoi on September 17, after which he submitted a formal memorandum to the Chief Minister urging rapid support for affected citizens. Despite these representations, he maintained that promised relief has yet to materialize for the victims.
