Tension escalated along the Assam-Tripura border in Sribhumi district following the discovery of the body of a missing local BJP booth president who had gone missing two days prior. The death of 52-year-old Bikash Ranjan Dhar sparked widespread anger among local residents, resulting in street protests and violent clashes in several neighborhoods. Law enforcement agencies have taken six individuals into custody in connection with the crime and implemented stringent security measures across the affected zones.
Disappearance Following a Motorcycle Trip
According to official details, Bikash Ranjan Dhar, a resident of Chagalmowa village, rode out from his home on a motorcycle on August 12 but failed to return. After repeated attempts to reach him proved unsuccessful, his family lodged a missing person report with the police. Investigators subsequently tracked his call details, which yielded vital leads. Acting on telephone records, police located his body near a pond at Jogichhara on Friday.
Suspected Personal Enmity and Escape Attempt
In the aftermath of the recovery, police detained six suspects, including two primary accused aged 24 and 30. Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime) Trinayan Bhuyan stated that preliminary investigations indicate the murder was likely motivated by personal enmity. During questioning, one of the detained individuals attempted to flee police custody and attacked a constable using a sharp weapon. Officers opened fire to subdue him, injuring his left leg before taking him back into custody.
Vandalism, Arson, and Prohibitory Orders
News of Dhar's death triggered angry demonstrations across Chagalmowa, Bazaricherra, and neighboring areas. The unrest escalated as crowds engaged in vandalism and arson, setting fire to several commercial shops. To prevent further violence, the district administration clamped down prohibitory orders under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS). Police reported that the situation has since been brought under control, while formal investigations into the homicide and subsequent riots continue.
