Devotees planning a pilgrimage to Shri Mata Vaishno Devi during Navratri have received significant relief as Indian Railways announced a special train service between New Delhi and Katra. The decision comes amid immense festive rush that had left regular trains fully booked, providing a practical travel alternative for passengers seeking confirmed berths.
Severe Booking Rush on Katra Routes
During the auspicious days of Navratri, hundreds of thousands of pilgrims travel to Jammu and Kashmir to pay homage at the holy shrine. Ahead of the festive week, regular rail services originating or passing through hubs such as Kanpur, Firozabad, and Kashi experienced massive waiting lists, with seats getting booked months in advance. The severe shortage of confirmed tickets had left many families uncertain about their travel schedules.
Route and Operations of the Festive Special
The newly notified special service will operate from New Delhi railway station and culminate at Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra. Along its journey, the train will make scheduled halts at approximately 10 to 12 intermediate stations, facilitating boarding and deboarding for passengers across northern transit points. By introducing this designated service, the railway network aims to absorb excess passenger volume and ease congestion on regular express lines.
Key Travel Regulations and Shrine Protocols
Alongside expanded train connectivity, authorities have implemented strict crowd management protocols in Katra. Pilgrims heading towards the bhawan must carry a valid RFID card, without which entry past base security checkpoints remains prohibited. With high visitor turnout often leading to regulated registration counters, travelers are advised to secure their confirmed rail bookings and shrine passes well before departing.
