Kia is officially making its entry into the factory-fitted CNG passenger vehicle market in India. During the launch event for the new Kia Sorento, the company showcased the CNG versions of the Carens and Carens Clavis. Both models will feature a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine paired with a factory-fitted CNG system. When operating in CNG mode, the engine produces 96 PS of power and 123 Nm of torque. A 60-litre CNG tank has been fitted inside the boot, while the spare wheel remains positioned underneath.
Mechanical Upgrades and Performance
To accommodate the extra weight, the suspension has been retuned and the front disc brakes have been upgraded. While prices have not been announced yet, the market launch is scheduled for the coming days. These versions are tailored for buyers who want lower running costs without sacrificing the practicality of a three-row MPV. Previously, the Carens only offered a dealer-level CNG kit, but it will now come straight from the factory. The exterior styling of the Carens Clavis is built on Kia digital tiger face design language, featuring ice cube LED headlights, star map connected LED tail lights, front and rear skid plates, and stylish bumpers. The design of the CNG version remains identical to the petrol model.
Interior Layout and Seating
Inside the cabin, buyers get the choice of a 6 or 7-seater layout. The second row can slide, recline, and tumble forward. Since the Clavis CNG will be available in base variants such as HTE and HTE O, it provides a basic yet spacious cabin with easy access to the third row. The base variants are expected to feature power windows, rear AC vents, USB ports, parking sensors, and a basic infotainment system, while higher-end amenities like panoramic displays or ventilated seats might remain limited.
Safety Features and Fuel Economy
Standard safety equipment across all variants includes 6 airbags, ESC, ABS, hill start assist, all-wheel disc brakes, TPMS, and rear parking sensors, with the front brakes specifically upgraded for the CNG model. The 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine generates 96 PS and 123 Nm of torque in CNG mode. The company states it has been calibrated for real-world performance. The boot space drops to 116 litres, and while official mileage figures have not been revealed yet, estimates suggest it will deliver around 22 to 25 kilometres per kilogram.
