Mahindra is gearing up to expand its utility vehicle portfolio in India with a brand-new compact SUV. The vehicle, known as the Mahindra Vision S, has been spotted undergoing real-world road testing in its production-ready guise. The latest visual details reveal finalized headlamp clusters and front fascia styling, indicating that the Indian automaker is rapidly moving forward with its development timeline. This upcoming model aims to carve out a unique space by blending rugged off-road dynamics with everyday urban practicality.
Platform, Dimensions and Strategic Positioning
Built upon the company's newly developed Freedom_N/U architecture, this vehicle possesses a highly adaptable structure. This platform is engineered to support multiple powertrain layouts, including conventional petrol and diesel systems, modern hybrid systems, and full battery-electric setups. In terms of market positioning, this sub-four-meter vehicle will slot neatly between the existing XUV 3XO and the iconic Scorpio. It features a highly commanding seating position, elevated ground clearance, and a boxy silhouette to deliver an authentic sports utility experience.
The conceptual version of this SUV boasted a generous 277 mm of ground clearance alongside a 2665 mm wheelbase. Industry expectations suggest that these generous dimensions will largely carry over to the final commercial model. A rear tailgate-mounted spare wheel further accentuates its rough-and-tough character. While the automotive giant originally showcased its Vision concepts in 2025, the Vision S is scheduled to be the very first iteration to hit the commercial assembly lines in 2027. The sighting of an AdBlue filler cap during road trials has already confirmed the presence of a diesel engine option.
Exterior Styling and Interior Comfort
The aesthetic direction of the vehicle is distinctly muscular and angular. Upfront, it incorporates square LED headlamps paired with vertical DRLs, integrated fog lamps, a prominent wide front grille, and heavy protective body cladding. Around the back, the combination of inverted L-shaped tail lamps and the door-mounted spare wheel draws strong design parallels to premium off-roaders like the Land Rover Defender. Moving inside, the cabin is designed to offer dual digital display screens, prominent air-conditioning vents, physical buttons for quick shortcuts, a stylish three-spoke steering wheel, and a panoramic sunroof. A flat floor design, 60:40 split-folding rear seats, and a highly accommodating boot ensure maximum utility.
Advanced Technology, Safety and Powertrain Details
On the technological front, the vehicle will come equipped with a sizeable touchscreen infotainment system, wireless smartphone connectivity, connected car features, and cruise control. Higher-spec trims are anticipated to host advanced convenience options. Safety remains a key focus area, with the vehicle expected to feature a robust structural design aimed at securing high crash-test ratings. It is slated to carry multiple airbags, Level-2 ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems), and a 360-degree camera setup for comprehensive parking assistance.
Under the hood, the primary engine choices will consist of a 1.2-litre turbo petrol unit and a 1.5-litre diesel engine, available with both manual and automatic transmission choices. Alternative hybrid and pure electric powertrains are expected to join the lineup at a later date. In terms of efficiency, the petrol variants are projected to deliver a mileage of approximately 16 to 18 kmpl, while the diesel version is estimated to achieve an impressive 20 to 22 kmpl. The starting price for this SUV is expected to remain highly competitive at under ₹10 lakh, whereas the premium, fully-loaded variants could range between ₹17 lakh and ₹22 lakh (ex-showroom) upon its official arrival in 2027.
