Competition in the Indian premium hatchback arena has intensified with Maruti Suzuki and Toyota updating their respective high-volume offerings. Although both vehicles share the exact same underlying architecture and mechanical parts, car buyers face a clear dilemma regarding which hatchback aligns better with their financial budget and driving preferences. Maruti introduced the Baleno facelift in September 2026, followed quickly by Toyota rolling out the Glanza facelift in October 2026.
Price Positioning Across Variants
The pricing structure reveals a distinct separation right from the base trim levels. Maruti Suzuki Baleno starts at an ex-showroom price of ₹5.99 lakh for the entry-level Sigma petrol manual trim, scaling up to ₹9.99 lakh for the flagship Alpha (O) automatic variant. In contrast, the Toyota Glanza facelift carries an entry ex-showroom price of ₹6.99 lakh for its base E petrol manual version, reaching up to ₹10.98 lakh for the top-spec V (O) automatic model. This creates an entry-point premium of around ₹1 lakh for buyers choosing the Toyota badge over the Maruti Suzuki counterpart.
Front Fascia and Exterior Dimensions
While the overall silhouette, side profiles, and rear styling of both vehicles remain largely indistinguishable, the front-end treatment sets them apart. Glanza incorporates a wider honeycomb front grille highlighted by a chrome strip, prominent silver accents, and rectangular LED fog lights, delivering a more upscale look. Meanwhile, Baleno retains Maruti's distinctive NEXWave grille paired with a slightly revised bumper profile. Both hatchbacks introduce refreshed paint options, including Teal Green. On the dimensional front, both measure 3990 mm in overall length, share a 2520 mm wheelbase, and provide 318 litres of boot capacity.
Cabin Ambience and Modern Equipment
Inside the cabin, the basic dashboard architecture is shared, yet the interior color palettes establish different atmospheres. Glanza adopts a two-tone beige and black layout, whereas Baleno uses a sportier black and blue cabin scheme. Both models come equipped with a 9-inch central touchscreen running wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Premium amenities available on the top-tier trims include ventilated front seats, a cooled wireless phone charger, a head-up display, automatic climate control, dedicated rear air-conditioning vents, and a 360-degree parking camera setup. Connected telematics remain proprietary, with Glanza using Toyota i-Connect while Baleno operates Suzuki Connect.
Powertrain Specifications and Fuel Mileage
Under the hood, both hatchbacks feature the Z12E 1.2-litre three-cylinder naturally aspirated engine. Running on petrol, this unit generates a peak output of 83 hp alongside 112.4 Nm of torque, while switching to CNG reduces output figures to 70 hp and 102 Nm. Transmission duties are managed by either a 5-speed manual gearbox or a 5-speed AMT. Official claimed fuel efficiency numbers for petrol configurations stand at 23.80 kmpl for the manual and 24.77 kmpl for the AMT. In CNG trim, the manual variant achieves 33.61 km per kg, whereas the AMT version delivers 34.47 km per kg, supported by idle start-stop technology.
Safety Hardware and Driver Assistance
Passenger safety sees a notable step up, with six airbags included as standard equipment across all variants of both vehicles. Fundamental active safety systems such as ABS with EBD, electronic stability program, and hill-hold assist are universally fitted. Furthermore, the flagship grades, namely Glanza V(O) and Baleno Alpha(O), incorporate Level-2 ADAS capabilities comprising adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist, and autonomous emergency braking. Both hatchbacks are also expected to secure a 5-star crash safety rating under Bharat NCAP testing protocols.
