Indian passenger car buyer preferences showed decisive momentum in September, with home-grown automaker Tata Motors registering heavyweight numbers across diverse market segments. Compact utility vehicles delivering strong crash test assurances alongside pocket-friendly fuel consumption metrics emerged as the primary volume pullers for the brand.
Nexon Retains Top Delivery Crown
Leading the company chart, the Nexon alongside its pure battery variant completed 20,456 dispatches during the single month of September. Starting with an introductory showroom tag of ₹7,39,990, the platform provides buyers an option between a 1.2L turbo-petrol and a 1.5L diesel powertrain. These motors yield certified fuel returns spanning 17 to 24 kmpl, whereas the electric alternative clocks an estimated operational radius of around 465 km per complete recharge. Key cabin highlights include a 10.25-inch touchscreen interface, ventilated front seating, leatherette interior appointments, and a proven 5-star crash safety validation.
Punch Registers 27.95 Percent Expansion
Securing the runner-up position, the micro-SUV Punch unlocked an impressive 27.95% volume boost, concluding the monthly run with 20,333 unit dispatches. Pricing for this model begins at ₹6.13 lakh and tops out at ₹10.20 lakh, with the battery-electric derivative initiating from ₹10 lakh. Power comes through a 1.2-litre petrol unit that also offers factory-fitted CNG compatibility, returning efficiency ratings between 18 and 27 km/kg or kmpl, while the EV version manages up to 421 km on a charge. It carries a 5-star safety evaluation, dual-tone cabin finish, a 360-degree parking camera, and a digital instrument display.
Volume Split: Sierra and Tiago
Standing third on the chart, the boxy retro-themed Sierra attracted 7,205 buyers. Outfitted with ADAS driver assist tech, a panoramic glass roof, a sprawling lounge-style interior, and a 5-star standard safety frame, it runs on an advanced turbo-petrol block alongside an electric drivetrain. The petrol iteration yields 15-18 kmpl efficiency, while the battery version reaches an estimated driving distance of nearly 500 km.
In the entry hatchback category, the Tiago generated 7,043 sales during September. Offered between ₹5.65 lakh and ₹8.90 lakh (with its EV counterpart opening at ₹7.99 lakh), it runs on a 1.2L Revotron petrol engine that delivers 19-20 kmpl, stretching beyond 26 km/kg on CNG fuel. The Tiago EV provides a certified range of 315 km, accompanied by automatic climate management and a 4-star safety rating.
Harrier, Altroz and Curvv Numbers
The premium midsize Harrier accounted for 3,082 sales in September, sitting in the ₹15.50 lakh to ₹26.50 lakh price bracket. It relies on a 2.0-litre Kryotec diesel motor producing 168 bhp of output with 14-16 kmpl mileage. The SUV features a 12.3-inch screen console, active ADAS protection, and a Bharat NCAP certified 5-star safety badge.
Meanwhile, the Altroz premium hatchback found 2,944 customers, retailing between ₹6.65 lakh and ₹11.35 lakh. It offers Harman audio components, a sunroof, and choice of 1.2L petrol or 1.5L diesel units returning 19 to 23 kmpl.
