Maruti Suzuki India, the country's leading car manufacturing enterprise, has set an ambitious target of retailing 9 lakh CNG vehicles throughout the ongoing financial year. The corporate leadership believes that the aftermath of the ongoing conflict in West Asia has triggered continuous hikes in petrol and diesel prices across markets, which in turn has supercharged the demand for CNG-powered vehicles among everyday commuters looking to cut down on fueling costs.
Surpassing 2.2 Lakh CNG Deliveries in the First Quarter
Partho Banerjee, Senior Executive Officer for Marketing and Sales at Maruti Suzuki India, revealed that the enterprise successfully moved 2.2 lakh CNG vehicles across various model categories during the very first quarter of the current fiscal year. This impressive tally represents a massive 58 percent surge when measured against the figures recorded during the corresponding period of the previous year.
Global Fuel Inflation Accelerates CNG Adoption
Explaining the market dynamics, Partho Banerjee pointed out that escalating fuel costs stemming from the West Asian crisis have directly fueled consumer preference shifts toward alternative powertrains. When questioned about the overarching sales targets for the 2026-27 fiscal cycle, he noted that based on the robust performance witnessed in the opening quarter, the enterprise is confidently projecting total sales of roughly 9 lakh CNG units by the end of the financial term.
Stepping Up from Last Year's 7 Lakh Milestone
To put the current growth into perspective, Maruti Suzuki retailed upwards of 7 lakh CNG automobiles in the preceding financial year of 2025-26. Banerjee highlighted that while CNG adoption was traditionally restricted to compact hatchbacks, utility vans, and the Ertiga in earlier years, consumer demand has now heavily breached the SUV segment, where buyers are showing immense enthusiasm for factory-fitted gas options.
Underbody CNG Tanks Dominate Modern SUV Sales
According to the senior executive, more than 50 percent of the total sales volume for the Victoris SUV originates from variants equipped with underbody-mounted CNG tanks. Capitalizing directly on this consumer preference trend, the company has integrated the same practical underbody CNG tank configuration into the new Brezza S-CNG model lineup to preserve valuable cargo room.
CNG Captures 42 Percent of Total Monthly Sales in June 2026
Maruti Suzuki currently maintains a robust portfolio of 15 distinct CNG models within the domestic passenger car market, which also incorporates light commercial vehicles. During the month of June 2026 alone, CNG-powered models accounted for a substantial 42 percent share of the company's total cumulative sales, illustrating the mainstream dominance and widespread acceptance of factory-backed green fuel technology.
