Monsoon activity has intensified across Bihar, leading to intermittent rainfall in most parts of the state. In light of this, the Meteorological Center has issued a specific warning for 17 districts today, Friday. According to the department, these districts are expected to experience heavy rain accompanied by intense thunderstorms. Wind speeds in these areas could reach up to 60 kilometers per hour. There is also a significant probability of lightning strikes (vajrapat), thunder, and heavy downpours in several locations.

Orange Alert for 12 Districts and Yellow Alert for 5

The weather bureau has declared an orange alert for 12 districts, primarily covering North and Central Bihar, citing the possibility of severe rainfall. The districts under the orange alert include West Champaran, East Champaran, Gopalganj, Siwan, Saran, Sheohar, Sitamarhi, Muzaffarpur, Vaishali, Madhubani, Darbhanga, and Samastipur. Additionally, a yellow alert has been issued for 5 districts: Khagaria, Munger, Bhagalpur, Jamui, and Banka, where moderate to heavy rain is anticipated.

Current Monsoon Status and Rainfall Deficit

Official data indicates that Bihar has recorded 53 percent less rainfall than normal during the current monsoon season so far. While rainfall activity has been widespread over the last 24 hours, the overall monsoon progress remains slower than the long-term average. In the past 24 hours, the highest rainfall in the state was recorded at 108.2 millimeters in Amdabad, located in the Katihar district.

Weather Outlook for Patna

In the capital city of Patna and its surrounding regions, the weather is expected to remain a mix of sunshine and clouds today. The daytime maximum temperature is projected to hover around 35 degrees Celsius. However, a sudden shift in weather conditions is expected towards the evening. Light rain is predicted for the capital during the evening or night hours. The department has clarified that no specific alert for heavy rain or storms has been issued for Patna city specifically at this time.

Temperature Variations and Regional Rainfall Data

Several districts continue to report significantly lower-than-normal rainfall, including Gaya, Rohtas, Kaimur, Aurangabad, Buxar, Bhojpur, Patna, Nalanda, Nawada, Jamui, Madhubani, Sitamarhi, Saran, Vaishali, Araria, Purnia, and Supaul. Conversely, parts of Darbhanga, Begusarai, Samastipur, Bhagalpur, Banka, Katihar, and West Champaran have seen rainfall near or above normal levels. Regarding temperatures, Kaimur recorded the highest maximum at 36.2 degrees Celsius, while Patna's maximum temperature reached 36.6 degrees Celsius. The lowest minimum temperature was 25.5 degrees Celsius, recorded in Bikramganj (Rohtas) and Valmikinagar.

Advisory for Residents and Farmers

Given the deteriorating weather conditions, the meteorological office has urged residents to exercise extreme caution. People have been advised to avoid staying in open fields, standing under tall trees, or remaining near water bodies during incidents of thunder and lightning. It is recommended to maintain a safe distance from weak structures and utility poles. Farmers are particularly urged to stay updated with the latest weather forecasts while working in the fields and to immediately seek shelter in a safe location if they observe lightning in the sky.

What this means for you

Across India: Residents in areas under heavy rain alerts should avoid unnecessary travel and stay clear of waterlogged roads.
