IMD Rain Alert: Heavy Showers and Thunderstorms Warned Across Chennai and Neighboring Districts

The Meteorological Department has issued a fresh forecast predicting thunderstorms, lightning, and heavy spells of rain across several districts in Tamil Nadu.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a fresh weather forecast warning of significant meteorological changes across parts of Tamil Nadu. The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) in Chennai has predicted moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds for the capital city and several surrounding districts. This active weather spell is primarily attributed to the formation of a weak low-pressure system in the lower atmospheric levels near the Tamil Nadu coast.

Districts Under the Rain Radar

According to the latest updates from the weather department, rain is expected to lash Chennai, Chengalpattu, Thiruvallur, Kancheepuram, and Ranipet districts through Sunday. Similar weather conditions are anticipated in several regions surrounding the Western Ghats. In Chennai, the sky is expected to remain partly cloudy on Saturday, with moderate spells of rain accompanied by thunder and lightning likely in some parts of the city during the evening or night hours.

Maximum temperatures are projected to hover between 37 to 38 degrees Celsius, while minimum temperatures are likely to range from 27 to 28 degrees Celsius. Furthermore, the meteorological office has predicted heavy rainfall at isolated places over the hilly regions of Coimbatore and Nilgiris districts on August 24 and August 25. Residents and travelers in these areas have been advised to remain cautious, particularly in zones prone to waterlogging or transport disruptions due to heavy downpours. Light to moderate rain is expected at a few places near the Western Ghats on August 26 and August 27.

Across the rest of Tamil Nadu, the weather is likely to remain largely dry or partly cloudy, though isolated showers cannot be ruled out entirely. Maximum temperatures across Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal are not expected to witness any major changes through Sunday. However, daytime temperatures in the interior pockets of Tamil Nadu may experience a slight rise, staying two to three degrees Celsius above normal in a few interior districts.

Relief from Humid Conditions

Temperatures across Puducherry, Karaikal, and the remaining parts of Tamil Nadu are expected to stay close to seasonal averages. Coastal districts, including Chennai and its vicinity, are likely to experience humid and uncomfortable weather during the day due to high temperatures and moisture levels. However, the anticipated thunderstorms later in the day are expected to provide temporary relief from the stifling heat.

Authorities have urged citizens to exercise caution during thunderstorms, avoid taking shelter under trees, and stay away from open areas when lightning strikes. Motorists have also been advised to drive carefully during sudden downpours and strong winds to ensure road safety.

This weather warning goes beyond a mere natural shift; the administration must proactively address critical public safety concerns. Deploying disaster management teams is vital to handle potential waterlogging, transport disruptions, and lightning hazards in coastal and hilly districts during heavy downpours.

While this meteorological update raises hopes of relief from humid conditions in coastal belts, it also exposes the reality of urban infrastructure where even moderate spells frequently trigger waterlogging and severe traffic disruptions for commuters. Furthermore, with heavy downpours predicted for hilly regions and areas near the Western Ghats such as Nilgiris, authorities must proactively execute disaster preparedness measures against potential risks like localized flooding and landslides to ensure public safety during adverse weather phases.
