Political friction surrounding the Dharapuram assembly by-election in Tamil Nadu reached a boiling point following controversial remarks made by DMK president M.K. Stalin regarding TVK candidate Sathyabhama. Tamizhaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) has formally accused Stalin of ridiculing the physical appearance of their female candidate in an indecorous and offensive manner during a recent campaign event. The controversy quickly escalated beyond routine political sparring, culminating in TVK lodging formal complaints with both the Election Commission of India and local law enforcement authorities. Shortly after, TVK president Vijay launched a fierce offensive against Stalin on social media, leveling serious allegations against the conduct and values of the DMK leadership.
The Campaign Rally at the Heart of the Dispute
The controversy traces back to a campaign meeting organized by the DMK in Dharapuram on Friday. According to representatives from TVK, Stalin used the platform to take unwarranted jibes at candidate Sathyabhama, targeting her appearance in front of the assembled gathering. The remarks prompted immediate indignation within the TVK camp. Party leader and Minister Nirmal Kumar initially declared that the matter would be taken up with electoral authorities. Acting swiftly, TVK's legal team approached both the Election Commission and the police to file detailed complaints. In their submission, the lawyers argued that making derogatory remarks about a woman candidate's physical appearance directly violates basic standards of public decorum as well as established campaign regulations.
Vijay Slams DMK over Decorum and Standards
As the issue gathered momentum, TVK chief Vijay took to social media to express his anger and call out the ruling party's conduct. In a statement posted on X, Vijay contended that under the pretext of campaigning for the Dharapuram assembly by-election, the DMK had organized an unseemly and defamatory gathering. He directly accused Stalin of mocking the physical appearance of TVK's Dharapuram contender, Sathyabhama. Vijay added that Stalin spoke in an utterly disrespectful tone and appeared pleased while doing so. Using forceful words against the DMK, Vijay alleged that the party actively promotes vulgarity and malice, asserting that Stalin had effectively acknowledged his own wrongdoing through such public behavior.
Spotlight on Respect for Women in Politics
Vijay broadened his criticism by framing the incident around the DMK's historical conduct toward women in public life. He alleged that using indecent language regarding women has become an entrenched feature of the DMK's political handbook. Vijay emphasized that making offensive remarks about a woman in a public assembly attended by women voters was deeply unacceptable. He stated that the people of Tamil Nadu, particularly the electorate in Dharapuram, would deliver a fitting response to this conduct. Positioning himself as a son and brother to the women of Tamil Nadu, Vijay expressed strong condemnation against the DMK, characterizing the episode as an affront to democratic decency.
Electoral Clash Transitions into Formal Scrutiny
With TVK's legal wing placing formal complaints before the police and election authorities, the dispute has entered administrative scrutiny. On the opposing side, DMK spokesperson T.K.S. Elangovan countered TVK's political posture by asserting that the party recognizes impending defeat across both constituencies due to internal unrest among its own cadres, arguing that anxiety over poor performance explains their aggressive rhetoric. As election day approaches in Dharapuram, this bitter personal and institutional confrontation between the DMK and TVK has emerged as the defining issue of the campaign, with observers closely watching how law enforcement and electoral officials handle the registered complaints.
