Law enforcement personnel encountered unexpected violence in Bihar's Sitamarhi district when an emergency response squad responding to a domestic altercation came under direct assault in Soharwa village. The incident took place late Friday night within the jurisdiction of Sonbarsa police station. Sub-Inspector Punit Kumar alongside multiple police personnel sustained physical injuries as agitated villagers turned hostile. The confrontation rapidly escalated to the point where the official patrol vehicle was heavily vandalised, prompting authorities to deploy personnel from neighbouring police stations and Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) units to restore order.
Intervention in Local Dispute Sparks Mob Hostility
The sequence of events began when a resident of Soharwa village placed an emergency call to the Dial 112 helpline, reporting an ongoing physical assault against him. In response to the distress call, an emergency police vehicle arrived at the scene to diffuse tensions between the fighting parties. While officers attempted to mediate the confrontation, verbal arguments erupted between the police team and several individuals assembled at the spot. Within moments, the confrontation degenerated into physical aggression, and a group of locals launched a coordinated assault against the visiting officers.
Patrol Vehicle Smashed Amid Video Footage Showing Alleged Gunshots
The attackers specifically targeted the Dial 112 vehicle during the rampage, causing extensive destruction. The front looking glass and windscreen of the vehicle were completely shattered, and the vehicle doors were broken by the force of the assault. Video footage capturing the unrest has also surfaced, depicting police officers forced to retreat while being pursued by a disorderly crowd. The recording captures sounds resembling two rounds of gunfire. However, the precise nature of the alleged shooting and the identity of those responsible remain subject to formal confirmation by investigators.
Medical Attention for Injured Personnel and Reinforcements Dispatched
Sub-Inspector Punit Kumar and the other injured police personnel were promptly evacuated from the village and transported to the Sonbarsa Community Health Centre (CHC) for primary medical care. Reports indicate that several villagers also sustained minor abrasions during the chaotic confrontation. Following alerts regarding the attack, senior administrative and police leadership dispatched extra detachments, including personnel from the SSB, to secure the perimeter. ASP Ashish Anand arrived directly at the location to inspect the crime scene and coordinate the response with ground officers.
Seven Suspects Detained as Investigation Continues
Providing details on the police action, ASP Ashish Anand stated that the Dial 112 squad had responded to a brawl complaint before being targeted by local individuals. He confirmed that seven suspects have been taken into custody for questioning in connection with the violence. Authorities are currently reviewing recordings and interviewing witnesses to determine the exact motive behind the conflict and identify all individuals involved in the assault. Heavy police deployment remains stationed inside the village to maintain peace and prevent any resurgence of unrest.
