The Ganga River and its tributary networks are flowing in full spate across Bihar following intense monsoon showers in northern India. Water levels have risen sharply in the capital city of Patna as well as several surrounding districts, threatening normal civilian life in low-lying riparian tracts. Amidst this rising threat, major security breaches have been reported from Begusarai and Bhagalpur districts, where protective rings and marginal embankments gave way under massive water pressure. Administrative teams and water resource departments have rushed to both sites to launch round-the-clock repair work to tame the surging currents and mitigate potential devastation.
Ring Embankment Breaches in Begusarai
In the Bachhwara block of Begusarai district, the swelling waters of the Ganga have triggered localized flooding after a zamindari ring embankment collapsed. A roughly 30-meter stretch of the earthen barrier between Begamsarai and Jhamatiya villages washed away under powerful currents during the early morning hours between three and four o'clock. As soon as villagers realized the embankment had given way, they rushed to the site to try and stem the torrential flow by cutting down trees and placing branches into the breach. Authorities were immediately alerted, prompting the flood control department to take over emergency operations.
According to officials, a team from the water resources department had inspected the embankment as late as midnight. However, heavy water pressure and erosion caused a large palm tree near the bank to topple during the early hours. Because the tree's roots penetrated deep into the core of the ring structure, its uprooting created a fatal vulnerability, causing the 30-meter section to cave in. This breach has submerged hundreds of acres of standing agricultural crops. Flood threats are now looming over Rani village, with water starting to seep into residential houses in low-lying pockets. Pressure has also mounted significantly on the Gupta Lakhminia embankment, leading local residents to demand urgent repairs on the breached structure to ease stress on the downstream main bund.
Marginal Embankment Collapses in Bhagalpur
The situation remains equally critical in the Raghopur region of Bhagalpur district, where a segment of the Kazikoreya-Raghopur marginal embankment along the Ganga gave way, triggering panic among local residents. Officials stated that the breach occurred due to intense water pressure and rising levels around 2:30 AM on Sunday in the Kharik circle. District Magistrate Alankrita Pandey is personally monitoring the evolving situation on the ground.
Top administrative and engineering officials, including the Additional Collector for Disaster Management, the Sub-Divisional Officer of Naugachia, and various flood control division engineers, rushed to the site near Shankarpur Tola in ward number 12. The district administration stated that water from the breach is flowing toward Naugachia, and technical teams are executing protective works on a war footing, deploying all necessary resources and materials to control the water flow and halt further erosion. Officials noted that the breach site is located approximately 500 meters from a prominent local leader's ancestral village. The administration has urged citizens to remain calm and ignore rumors, assuring the public that every necessary measure is being implemented to safeguard lives and property.
