The Indian Navy has significantly strengthened its operational capabilities with the induction of a specialized vessel designed to execute complex missions deep beneath the ocean surface. This advanced ship is engineered to remain stable during severe weather conditions and turbulent sea waves, enabling it to rescue submarines and personnel trapped in deep waters. Furthermore, it can carry out underwater repairs on damaged ships or machinery, providing the navy with vital inputs and data from the ocean floor. The formal commissioning ceremony of the vessel takes place today at the Naval Dockyard in Mumbai.
Indigenous Design and Specialized Engineering
The vessel is equipped with numerous unique capabilities designed for intricate military and relief operations in the depths of the ocean. Approximately 75 percent of the ship is entirely indigenous, reflecting a major contribution from domestic industries and MSMEs that eliminates foreign dependency for deep-sea missions. Unlike a conventional warship that primarily operates on the water surface, the true strength of this vessel lies beneath the waves. Its core responsibilities include deep-water diving, submarine rescue operations, underwater surveillance, and debris removal in areas where standard vessels have limited reach. Earlier in July, the Indian Navy had also inducted the anti-submarine warfare vessel Malvan into its fleet.
