Following its widespread adoption across domestic terminals, India has officially initiated the rollout of the Digi Yatra biometric facial recognition ecosystem for international flight departures. A dedicated pilot project has been activated across seven prominent airports in the country, aiming to eliminate physical document checks at multiple transit junctures. Scheduled to run through November and December 2026, the trial provides select Indian passport holders travelling on designated overseas flights with a seamless, contactless airport journey. Passengers participating in the trial must possess a modern biometric e-passport. The facility is not yet universally available to every international traveller or every departing route, remaining focused on specified airline services and selected airport gates.
Seven Major Hubs Selected for Pilot Operations
The operational testing for outbound overseas travellers is underway at seven key airports across India. The participating hubs include Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi, along with international terminals in Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Cochin, Mumbai, Chennai, and Amritsar. These locations have integrated specialized automated biometric entry pods and scanners to facilitate real-time facial validation.
During this initial phase, the pilot program is strictly confined to selected international services operated by two Indian carriers, Air India and IndiGo. Furthermore, eligibility is restricted to Indian citizens who carry an e-passport equipped with an electronic chip. Travellers holding legacy non-chip passports will continue through the conventional physical inspection channels.
By utilizing this biometric route, registered passengers can complete mandatory clearances at terminal entry gates, the Security Hold Area (SHA), and final aircraft boarding gates without human physical interaction. The automated gates match facial features with encrypted travel tokens, substantially speeding up passenger transit times.
How the Digital International Setup Operates
To take advantage of the international Digi Yatra facility, departing passengers must first generate a Verifiable Credential on the official Digi Yatra mobile app using their e-passport. The registration involves a straightforward technical flow
- MRZ Code Scanning: The user first captures the Machine Readable Zone located at the base of the e-passport using their mobile camera.
- NFC Chip Verification: Utilizing the Near Field Communication feature of a compatible smartphone, the app reads the cryptographic details stored on the embedded chip inside the passport booklet.
- Live Selfie Capture: The passenger takes a real-time selfie photograph within the application to perform identity validation against the passport record.
- Credential Storage: Once the technical verification succeeds, the encrypted travel credential is created and retained locally within the Digi Yatra digital wallet on the user's mobile device.
Upon arrival at the airport, travellers can simply look into the biometric cameras at trial-enabled touchpoints to unlock the access barriers instantly.
Passport and Immigration Protocols Remain Mandatory
The Ministry of Civil Aviation has clarified that the international Digi Yatra trial is not a replacement for traditional travel documentation, but rather an extra layer designed to optimize terminal movement. All international passengers are required to carry their physical passport booklets, applicable visas, and relevant travel clearances. Airline document verification desks will continue normal checks before boarding passes are stamped. Crucially, standard government immigration processing and mandatory border controls will still take place in full compliance with existing border protocols.
Expansion Plans for 2027 and Domestic Network Reach
Data gathered from passenger feedback, processing efficiency, and system reliability during the two-month pilot will serve as the foundation for expanding international Digi Yatra services across additional airports and international airlines in 2027. Authorities will review throughput speeds and user comfort before initiating wider implementation.
The expansion into global departures builds on substantial domestic infrastructure. The Digi Yatra ecosystem is currently operational across 39 domestic airports in India. Within the domestic aviation market, over 2.65 crore travellers have actively adopted the mobile platform, with the biometric service already powering more than 11 crore smooth journeys to date.
