Senior administrative leadership in Manipur conducted on-the-ground assessments across temporary shelters to evaluate the ongoing welfare of residents uprooted by unrest. Manipur Chief Secretary Rajeev Singh Thakur, IAS, toured three relief camps situated in Thoubal district, holding direct discussions with internally displaced persons (IDPs) to examine their daily living standards, understand immediate grievances, and review access to critical amenities.
Delegation Visits Three Relief Facilities in Thoubal
The high-level administrative inspection covered three designated relief centres across the district: the Wangjing Sports Complex, Lamding Higher Secondary School, and the Rice Research Station located at Khangabok. Accompanying the Chief Secretary were Special Secretary (Home) Ahanthem Subash, IAS; Deputy Commissioner of Thoubal Yumnam Robita, IAS; Thoubal Superintendent of Police Manoj Prabhakar; and several other district administrative officers. Together, the delegation inspected premises and engaged directly with camp inhabitants.
Displaced Residents Highlight Loss of Homes and Livelihoods
During interactions with the Chief Secretary, displaced individuals outlined the persistent socioeconomic strain affecting their households. Many families recounted how their residential properties were destroyed or torched by arson during the ethnic turmoil that erupted on May 3, 2023. Displaced persons originating from hard-hit regions including Moreh, Serou, Sugnu, and Churachandpur described the enduring hardship of residing in makeshift accommodations while confronting pervasive uncertainty and disruption to their regular daily lives.
Review of In-Camp Weaving and Candle-Making Initiatives
While taking stock of living quarters, Thakur also reviewed various productive initiatives launched within the centres to sustain daily livelihoods. Residents have taken up micro-scale enterprises such as handloom weaving and candle-making to maintain economic activity inside the shelters. The visiting administrative team closely inspected these self-reliance programmes and acknowledged the practical efforts made by families navigating prolonged displacement.
Administrative Directives on Child Education and Essential Services
Concluding the visit, Chief Secretary Thakur issued directives to the Deputy Commissioner and local departmental heads to remain exceptionally responsive to the concerns voiced by camp residents. He underscored that district authorities must execute timely interventions without administrative delay, with particular emphasis on safeguarding schooling arrangements for displaced children and maintaining uninterrupted delivery of foundational public services to aid families in rebuilding their lives.
