Law enforcement authorities in Bihar's Jamui district have taken decisive action in the case involving the harassment of a minor schoolgirl and the circulation of an abusive clip online. Amid intense public outcry across the country, police apprehended the prime accused, identified as Nandan Yadav, following an armed encounter. The accused sustained a gunshot wound to his leg during the operation and was promptly transferred to a hospital for medical treatment. Nandan Yadav, who is linked to illicit sand mining and the illegal liquor trade, had been evading arrest following the incident.
Encounter Leaves Key Accused Injured
Nandan Yadav had gone into hiding shortly after the humiliation and harassment of the young student and her companion provoked widespread anger. Police squads tracked his movements before intercepting him. During the confrontation, a bullet fired by police personnel struck Yadav in the leg, disabling him on the spot. He was immediately transported to the hospital where he is undergoing treatment in the emergency ward. Authorities also brought an associate of Nandan Yadav to the same emergency unit, keeping both under strict surveillance as legal procedures proceed.
The Timeline of the September 19 Harassment
The criminal act took place on the evening of September 19 as the underage girl was heading home from a coaching center alongside a minor male companion. Around 6:45 PM, a group of miscreants surrounded the pair on their way. The perpetrators physically assaulted the boy, subjected both individuals to public humiliation, and molested the girl. Paralyzed by fear and concerned about potential societal harassment, the victims initially refrained from lodging a formal complaint with the authorities.
Viral Recording Sparks National Outrage
While the harassment was underway, individuals at the scene captured the ordeal using mobile phones. The footage was subsequently uploaded to online platforms, where it quickly circulated and caused nationwide outrage over student safety. Taking prompt note of the viral media, police initiated immediate legal steps by registering a case under the stringent provisions of the POCSO Act. A Special Investigation Team was dispatched to the area, and senior supervisory officers personally visited the crime scene to inspect the physical evidence and determine the exact sequence of events.
Seven Suspects Identified and Internet Accounts Booked
Investigators have so far pinned down seven suspects involved in the intimidation and assault. Three minor suspects were taken into custody earlier, while the key offender was secured through the encounter. A First Information Report has been registered against 120 social media handles. Investigators have specifically pinpointed 13 Facebook accounts, 12 Instagram profiles, and 7 Twitter handles that actively shared the unlawful footage, and extensive proceedings are being initiated against each of them.
