Investigators probing the gruesome murder of schoolteacher Shamshad Alam in the Banjariya police station area of Motihari, East Champaran, have secured a major breakthrough with the apprehension of Zubair Alam. The arrested individual worked as the personal driver for the mukhiya of Siswa Purvi panchayat. Police scrutiny revealed his direct involvement in the sequence of events that began with ambushing the educator on his route home, confining and battering him inside the local council building, and subsequently transporting the body away in a vehicle to dispose of it. Following this latest action, the total number of individuals apprehended in connection with the homicide has climbed to four.
Ambushed and Confined After Official Exam Duty
The violent incident took place on September 17 when teacher Shamshad Alam was returning home after concluding his duties as an examination controller at a government school located within the Banjariya block. Driven by old hostility, a group of assailants ambushed him near Siswa Purvi panchayat, cutting off his path before physically overpowering him. He was forcibly dragged inside the local panchayat bhavan, where the attackers locked the main doors from within to prevent escape or immediate intervention.
According to formal complaints, multiple assailants launched an unrestrained assault using sticks and wooden clubs right before national award-winning mukhiya Tanya Praveen. The attackers battered the schoolteacher mercilessly, fracturing his arms and legs and inflicting catastrophic physical injuries across his body.
Father Details Agonizing Search and Locked Doors
Mohammad Rafique Alam, the father of the deceased teacher, recounted a chilling narrative of that afternoon that laid bare both the brutality of the assault and the initial indifference of the surrounding community. Alerted by frantic local villagers, Mohammad Rafique rushed straight to the panchayat bhavan. Upon reaching the premises, he discovered the heavy entrance locked from the inside, while the agonizing screams and cries of his son echoed through the structure.
The desperate father hammered on the doors and pleaded with nearby bystanders to step forward and assist in rescuing his son, yet no one intervened. Moments later, the doors were flung open, and a Thar vehicle sped out of the compound at high velocity. Rushing inside, the father found the room deserted; the attackers had already spirited the critically wounded teacher away in the vehicle.
Lapse Allegations and Intimidation at the Police Station
Finding the scene empty, Mohammad Rafique hurried straight to the Banjariya police station, pleading with officers on duty to trace the vehicle and save his son's life. The family alleges that while police personnel did visit the panchayat bhavan, they merely completed a superficial inspection before returning to the station without taking meaningful pursuit actions. To make matters worse, officers allegedly threatened the grieving family, claiming the entire allegation was fabricated and warning that the relatives themselves would be locked up if they continued to press the matter.
Nearly three hours after the violent episode, Banjariya police informed the relatives that Shamshad Alam was at the Sadar Hospital in Motihari. When family members arrived at the facility, they found the teacher's lifeless body left entirely unattended on the premises, without any police guard, security, or official oversight.
Public Demonstrations and Political Engagement
Outrage over the brazen daylight murder quickly spilled into the streets of Motihari. Distraught relatives and hundreds of local residents placed Shamshad Alam's body directly on the main road outside the Sadar Hospital, staging an aggressive blockade and demonstration. The road occupation brought traffic to a complete standstill for hours, mounting immense pressure on the district administration to act against the culprits.
As public anger surged, a delegation from the Rashtriya Janata Dal visited the bereaved family to express solidarity. During the visit, delegates facilitated a WhatsApp video call between the family and Tejashwi Yadav, the Leader of the Opposition in the Bihar Legislative Assembly and former Deputy Chief Minister. Yadav extended his condolences and pledged comprehensive support to ensure legal accountability and justice for the slain educator.
Assembly Speaker Petitioned Over Central Jail Visit
The controversy deepened further after Mohammad Rafique Alam submitted a detailed written representation directly to the Speaker of the Bihar Legislative Assembly. In the petition, the victim's father raised serious questions regarding a visit undertaken by the Chairman of the Bihar Legislative Assembly's Committee on Private Members' Bills and Resolutions to the Motihari Central Jail.
The father explicitly alleged that the committee chairman used the visit to interact with and provide assistance to the jailed accused individuals connected with the murder. Calling for a high-level impartial inquiry, the petition demanded scrutiny into how incarcerated suspects were reportedly receiving political patronage and undue advantages behind bars.
Police Tally Four Apprehensions to Date
The formal First Information Report registered at the Banjariya police station names nine individuals as primary accused. Law enforcement teams have so far arrested two of the nine named suspects. In addition, ongoing investigations and technical tracking led to the arrest of two non-FIR suspects, including the mukhiya's driver, Zubair Alam. Police officials maintain that active search operations are underway across regional hideouts to track down the remaining fugitives involved in the conspiracy and execution of the crime.
