Despite a strict statewide prohibition in Bihar, bootleggers continue to devise innovative transport methods to smuggle contraband across districts. Official records indicate that over the past 10 years, authorities have seized more than 5.13 crore liters of liquor and arrested upwards of 17 lakh individuals. In the latest crackdown, the excise department intercepted a major consignment in Muzaffarpur. Acting on intelligence, officials searched a Rajasthan-registered container near the Maithi toll plaza and uncovered 375 cartons of liquor manufactured in Punjab, resulting in the immediate arrest of the vehicle's crew.
Concealed Behind Iron Sheets and Empty Crates
To outsmart inspection checkpoints and handheld security scanners, smugglers engineered specialized modifications inside the vehicle. Excise officials discovered that thick iron sheets had been welded onto both sides of the container's rear compartment to evade border scanning equipment. Furthermore, the 375 liquor cartons were carefully concealed beneath stacked empty plastic crates. This clever positioning ensured that the cargo remained hidden and made no suspicious rattling noises while the vehicle was in motion, preventing passing authorities from suspecting its contents.
Waiting Near the Toll Plaza Before the Bust
The excise operation was launched following a tip-off that a large consignment was being transported from Punjab through Uttar Pradesh via Ballia, Siwan, and Chhapra toward Muzaffarpur. Led by ASIs Ranjan Kumar Singh and Ajit Kumar, a team staked out the Maithi toll plaza area. According to officials, the container was parked roughly 100 meters before the toll gate. The driver was constantly on his mobile phone, waiting for an accomplice to arrive. When nobody showed up after an extended period, the enforcement team moved in, searched the truck, and detained the two crew members.
Planned Nighttime Delivery to Local Syndicate
According to Excise Inspector Prakash Kumar Ram, the illicit consignment was scheduled for distribution to local operators under the cover of night. The driver had been instructed to keep the truck parked at that exact spot throughout the day. The arrested individuals were identified as driver Kuldeep and conductor Ramchain, both residents of Haryana. During subsequent questioning, the names of several local operatives surfaced. The excise team is currently verifying their involvement and preparing to raid potential hideouts linked to the smuggling ring.
Legal Proceedings Under the Excise Act
Authorities have initiated formal procedures to file charges against the detained driver and conductor under the provisions of the Excise Act, and both are being moved into judicial custody. Enforcement agencies have maintained continuous pressure across Bihar over the last decade regarding prohibition enforcement. Police and excise units are actively working to dismantle the wider supply chain connecting Punjab bootleggers to local distributors in the region.
