Actress Swara Bhasker has added her voice to the growing wave of support for education reformer Sonam Wangchuk, who has been sitting on a hunger strike at Delhi's Jantar Mantar for the past 17 days as part of a demonstration organised by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP). She travelled to the protest site, met Wangchuk in person and later shared a note of gratitude for the stand he has taken.
Swara Bhasker's Visit To Jantar Mantar
On Tuesday, Swara Bhasker reached the protest site at Jantar Mantar in Delhi and spent time with Sonam Wangchuk, who is also known for his work as an environmental activist. After the meeting, she took to her Instagram Stories and shared several photographs from the visit. In one picture, she is seen standing alongside Abhijeet Dipke, the founder of the Cockroach Janta Party, and in another she is pictured with Sonam Wangchuk himself. Alongside the photos, she wrote a message thanking him, saying, "Thank you for fighting for the future of all our children." The post has quickly gone viral on social media, with users sharing and reacting to her show of solidarity.
17 Days Into The Fast, Health Concerns Mount
Sonam Wangchuk's hunger strike at Jantar Mantar has now stretched past two weeks, and it has raised serious concerns about his health and well being. Despite this, support for him has kept pouring in from all directions, with ordinary citizens and public figures alike turning up at the site or posting messages online. Photographs and videos of the ongoing fast have been circulating widely on social media platforms, keeping the protest in the public eye even as the days without food add up.
Other Celebrities Who Have Extended Support
Swara Bhasker is not the first well known name to back Sonam Wangchuk's cause. Veteran actress Zeenat Aman had earlier expressed concern over his hunger strike through social media and appealed to the government to begin talks on the issues that Wangchuk has raised. Actor Omi Vaidya, remembered for playing the character of Chatur Ramalingam in "3 Idiots," also shared a video on Instagram urging people to raise their voice in support of the fast. Meanwhile, actors Naseeruddin Shah and Ratna Pathak Shah, along with a number of writers, artists and educationists, have appealed directly to Sonam Wangchuk and the protesters gathered at Jantar Mantar to bring an end to the hunger strike, citing worry over his continuing health risk.
