The casting of Nitesh Tiwari's much-awaited 'Ramayana' has sparked an unusual side conversation. The real-life age gap between Ranbir Kapoor, who plays Lord Ram, and Sai Pallavi, cast as Sita, has sent fans back to the original Sanskrit text to check what age difference Valmiki himself assigned to the two characters.
How old are Ranbir Kapoor and Sai Pallavi really
Ranbir Kapoor was born on 28 September 1982, which puts him at 43 years of age today. Sai Pallavi, on the other hand, was born on 9 May 1992 and is currently 34. Doing the math on their birth dates places the real-life gap between the two actors at a little over nine and a half years, close enough to call it roughly a decade.
What the Valmiki Ramayana actually records
The question of how far apart Ram and Sita's ages were is answered directly in the Aranya Kanda of the Valmiki Ramayana. In this section, as Ravana tries to woo Sita during her abduction, she responds by telling him plainly how old she and her husband were at that point. The verse cited reads: mam bharta mahateja vayasa panchvinshakah, ashtadash hi varshani mam janmani ganyate. Rendered into English, Sita says that by the time they had spent a long stretch in exile, her husband was 25 years old while she herself was 18.
The wedding-day gap is a different, unsettled question
Going by that verse, the gap between Ram and Sita works out to seven years, well short of the roughly 10-year difference between Ranbir Kapoor and Sai Pallavi in real life. It is worth flagging that this age is the one recorded during their exile, not at the time of their marriage. How wide the gap was on their wedding day is still not settled. Texts including the Ramcharitmanas and the Valmiki Ramayana interpret it differently, which is why no single age or timeline commands consensus.
A film built on a reported Rs 4,000 crore budget
'Ramayana' is also making headlines for its scale. Its budget is pegged at close to Rs 4,000 crore, a number that would make it one of the most expensive Indian films ever mounted. The project is being released in two parts, with the first instalment arriving in theatres around Diwali 2026 and the second following a year later around Diwali 2027. The score is being composed jointly by A.R. Rahman and Hans Zimmer.
The rest of the cast lined up for Ram and Sita's story
Alongside playing Lord Ram, Ranbir Kapoor is also set to take on a second role as Lord Parshuram in the film. Sai Pallavi plays Sita, Yash has been cast as Ravana, Sunny Deol takes on Hanuman, and Ravi Dubey plays Lakshman. The supporting cast includes Arun Govil as King Dasharath, Kajal Aggarwal as Mandodari, Lara Dutta as Kaikeyi and Rakul Preet Singh as Shurpanakha, while Amitabh Bachchan lends his voice to Jatayu.
