The much loved horror franchise Tumbbad is finally getting its sequel, and this time Alia Bhatt is joining the cast alongside Soham Shah and Nawazuddin Siddiqui. The original film, released in 2018, is remembered as one of Indian cinema's finest horror outings, and its follow up is now fully ready to head into theatres.
The 2018 release that didn't work at the box office
When Tumbbad first hit screens in 2018, it failed to make any real mark at the box office. But over time, its story, striking visuals and horror rooted in Indian folklore turned it into a cult favourite. The film gradually came to be regarded as one of the finest works in Indian cinema.
The 2024 re-release that changed everything
When Tumbbad returned to cinemas in 2024, audiences showered it with love all over again. That re-release gave the film a fresh identity and strengthened its fan base even further. It was this overwhelming response that convinced the makers to take viewers back into the same mysterious, frightening world, paving the way for Tumbbad 2.
Tumbbad 2 arrives on December 3, 2027
Actor and producer Soham Shah has now officially announced Tumbbad 2. The film is currently in production, and the makers have confirmed it will release in theatres on December 3, 2027. As for the story, it will once again carry forward the same mysterious and terrifying world established in the first film. Soham Shah will reprise his role as Vinayak Rao, and besides acting in the film, he is also attached to it as a producer.
Alia Bhatt and Nawazuddin Siddiqui join the cast
Well known actor Nawazuddin Siddiqui will also be seen in a powerful role in Tumbbad 2. Alongside him, the makers have recently confirmed that Alia Bhatt is part of the film as well. Her addition has significantly raised anticipation for the sequel, with several new and prominent names now set to feature in the film.
The original was directed by Rahi Anil Barve
The first Tumbbad film was directed by Rahi Anil Barve. It told the story of a man who crosses every limit in his search for a hidden treasure, a treasure guarded by the mythical figure Hastar. Both audiences and critics praised the film's storytelling, cinematography and horror rooted in folklore. Now the film is set to pull viewers back into its world of fear once again, and lead actor Soham Shah appears even more excited about the release than the fans themselves.
