During a recently hosted cattle genomics summit in the city, several significant initiatives came to light aimed at improving livestock breeds and boosting milk yields through modern technology. A major highlight of the event was the birth of elite Gir calves produced with the help of cutting-edge scientific methods, marking a monumental milestone in the country's animal breed improvement sector.
INR 1,500 Crore Investment to Revolutionize Cattle Breeding
The Bareilly-based enterprise BL Agro has taken a massive leap forward by integrating animal husbandry with advanced technology. The company has officially announced an investment of approximately INR 1,500 crore into its biotechnology division, Leads Genetics. The primary objective of this ambitious initiative is to develop cattle breeds that possess significantly higher milk-yielding capacities. To achieve this, superior genetic traits in animals are carefully identified and subsequently utilized to propagate the next generation of cattle. Put simply, advanced scientific techniques are deployed to create high-quality embryos, which are then successfully transplanted into surrogate cows. The female calves born through this innovative process eventually mature into cows capable of producing far greater quantities of milk compared to standard livestock.
Up to 60 Liters of Daily Milk Production Potential
The successful genetic selection experiment in Bareilly has resulted in the birth of genetically superior elite Gir calves. According to the company, cows originating from these enhanced genetic lines hold the strong potential to produce between 40 and 60 liters of milk on a daily basis. However, the actual milk output will naturally depend upon proper animal care, optimal nutrition, and various surrounding environmental conditions. BL Agro Chairman Dr. Ghanshyam Khandelwal stated that the farmer will remain the most crucial link in this entire ecosystem. By combining superior breeds, scientific animal husbandry, and robust market linkages, new avenues will be created to substantially increase farmers' incomes. Beyond strengthening indigenous native breeds, the company is also actively working on producing elite bulls, embryos, and sexed semen domestically within the country. The upcoming Center of Excellence in Bareilly has set a target to produce around 15,000 embryos every single month by the end of the year 2027.
