Bharat Sahu, a resident of Shikari Para in the Balod district of Chhattisgarh, has mastered the art of sustainable entrepreneurship by aligning his business activities with the changing seasons. For several years, Bharat has successfully implemented this seasonal strategy, ensuring that his income remains stable regardless of the time of year. With the arrival of the rainy season, he has shifted his focus to selling hot, roasted corn, an initiative that has proven to be highly lucrative.
Operational Schedule and Consumer Demand
Bharat shared that he launched his current venture just a week ago, precisely when the monsoon rains began in Balod. He stations his cart near the Kacheri Chowk in the city, operating daily from 12:00 PM to 8:30 PM. His offerings include both traditional desi bhutta (local corn) and sweet corn. During the rainy season, the demand for sweet corn sees a significant surge. He has priced his prepared sweet corn at 30 rupees per piece, while the local desi bhutta is available to customers for 20 rupees.
The Secret to His Success
The secret to his popularity lies in the preparation, specifically the combination of black salt and lemon juice applied to the roasted corn, which enhances the flavor profile significantly. This distinct taste has become a hit among locals, leading to a consistent stream of customers at his cart. Currently, he is selling more than 80 pieces of corn every day. After accounting for all expenses, he manages to earn a net profit of over 600 rupees daily, which serves as a steady income source.
A Consistent Yearly Income Model
Bharat Sahu notes that his entire business model is strictly seasonal. He plans to sell roasted corn for the duration of the monsoon, which is roughly two and a half months. Once the season shifts, he will transition to a different commodity. Throughout the year, he trades in various items such as gram, cucumber, and mangoes, while during the peak summer months, he switches to selling ice cream. He believes that sticking to a single line of work often leads to stagnant earnings, whereas rotating businesses according to the weather cycle keeps the cash flow constant. Notably, he invested only 3,000 rupees to start this specific corn business, proving that significant capital is not a barrier to profitability.
