The bauxite factory in Manikpur, which once served as a major economic lifeline for the Patha region in Chitrakoot, now tells a tale of neglect and ruin. There was a time when the hum of the factory's machinery brought vibrancy to Manikpur town and its surrounding areas. Hundreds of families in the Patha region relied on this facility for their daily livelihood and sustenance. However, as time progressed, the factory shut down, wiping out a major source of employment from the locality. Today, the factory buildings have crumbled into ruins, compelling the region's youth to migrate to other districts and states in search of work.
Establishment In The 1980s
To trace its history, the bauxite factory located in Manikpur town began operations in the 1980s. Back then, it was considered nothing short of a boon for the Patha region. Bauxite extracted from nearby forests was brought here and pulverized using heavy machinery. The functioning of the factory not only provided direct employment to people but also generated income for locals through freight transport, manual labor, and various ancillary tasks. The local economy thrived because residents had steady earnings right at their doorstep.
Mining Restrictions Triggered Shutdown
However, circumstances shifted over time, leading to the eventual downfall of the enterprise. The region that supplied raw bauxite later faced a complete ban on mining imposed by the forest department. As the availability of bauxite dried up, operating the factory became increasingly difficult, ultimately forcing its closure. With the shutting down of the plant, a severe livelihood crisis gripped the hundreds of workers who depended on it for their daily bread.
Hope For Revival To Curb Migration
Sharing local perspectives, resident Lalit recalled that when the factory was functional, people in the Patha region secured employment close to their homes without needing to travel to distant cities. Once the plant closed, job opportunities vanished entirely. The current reality is that a large number of young people are heading towards other districts and states seeking employment and daily wage work. He suggested that if the defunct factory in Manikpur is revived or a new industry is established in its place, the residents of the Patha region would directly benefit, and the ongoing migration could be curbed.
Awaiting Government Intervention
Another local resident, Satya Prakash Dwivedi, noted that the factory was a massive employment hub for the Patha area during its peak. Following the mining restrictions, the factory gradually shut down, stripping away livelihoods from countless individuals. The Patha region continues to remain backward in terms of employment and industrial development. If the government and elected representatives take the initiative to establish an alternative factory on the site of this closed unit, it could entirely transform the future of Manikpur and the broader Patha region.
