There is welcome news for anyone who owns a home or a shop in the national capital. The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has extended the window to claim a 10 percent rebate on a one-time property tax payment for the financial year 2026-27. Earlier this offer was open only until June 30, but the last date has now been pushed to July 31. Officials confirmed the change on Tuesday.
Reaching more taxpayers with the discount
According to Delhi Mayor Pravesh Wahi, the step was taken so that the rebate could benefit as many taxpayers as possible. He acknowledged that several taxpayers had been unable to deposit their property tax within the set time for various reasons. The idea behind extending the date, he said, is to make paying tax easier for citizens and to encourage them to pay on time.
A boost expected for civic revenue
In his statement, the Mayor said taxpayers who have not yet cleared their dues will get significant relief from the extended timeline. He added that the move will also lift the corporation's revenue. That money is spent on the city's infrastructure, sanitation, health services, public amenities and other municipal services. On that note, he appealed to property owners to pay their lump-sum tax before July 31 and make full use of the 10 percent rebate.
Electricity consumer account number now mandatory
There is also an important change in the process this time. A corporation official said that supplying the electricity consumer account number has been made mandatory while paying property tax this year.
Heavy load slows down the portal
On the flip side, over the past three days many taxpayers have run into technical glitches on the corporation's portal. People complain that the sluggish website is making it hard to complete their payments. Officials say the portal is seeing very heavy traffic because of the rush of last-minute filers, which is causing the problem.
Collection up 20 percent over last year
The collection figures are encouraging too. According to the corporation, by the evening of Tuesday, June 30, property tax worth 1,260 crore rupees had been deposited in advance. During the same period last year, that figure stood at 1,040 crore rupees. This marks a rise of about 20 percent in collections this time.
