Hyundai Motor Group has fallen behind in the deployment schedule of its proprietary in-house driver-assistance technology. The software, which was originally slated for release by the end of 2027, will now debut with a two-year delay by the end of 2029. To bridge this gap and maintain its competitive edge in the market, Hyundai has joined forces with the American chipmaker Nvidia. This collaboration aims to keep the automotive giant relevant as competition in the autonomous driving space intensifies.
New Nvidia Partnership and Advanced Features
Under this collaborative framework, Hyundai will introduce level 2+ and level 2++ features of its advanced driver-assistance system alongside Nvidia in 2028. The level 2+ system is designed to assist drivers specifically during highway navigation, whereas the more sophisticated level 2++ system is built to operate seamlessly in dense urban traffic conditions, functioning similarly to Tesla's full self-driving system. These capabilities mark a significant step forward in Hyundai's driver-assistance roadmap.
Rising Industry Pressures and Challenges
This notable delay underscores just how complex and challenging it is for Hyundai to build its own automated driving software from scratch. Simultaneously, the setback raises the looming threat of falling further behind key industry rivals, particularly Tesla and aggressive Chinese automakers who are rapidly advancing in the same technology domain. Managing this competitive pressure has become a top priority for the South Korean manufacturer.
Balancing Independence and Collaboration
Hyundai Motor Group President Park Min-woo clarified that the partnership with Nvidia does not mean the company has handed over its complete destiny to the tech giant. Park explained that Hyundai will co-design the technology alongside Nvidia and will utilize the data generated from this collaboration to continuously improve its own proprietary software named Atria. This dual approach ensures that Hyundai retains its long-term technological independence.
Sensor Configurations and Safety Measures
Park further elaborated that Hyundai's upcoming vehicles powered by Nvidia's Hyperion 10 platform will initially omit expensive lidar sensors. Instead, the vehicles will rely on a combination of standard cameras, ultrasonic sensors, and traditional radar systems. However, the company is still evaluating lidar sensors for future level-3 automated systems, which will allow drivers to take their hands off the steering wheel entirely. Park stressed that sensor redundancy is essential for absolute safety, ensuring that if one sensor fails, another can seamlessly take over the operation.
Hyundai and its affiliate Kia Corp collectively sell more than 7 million vehicles annually. The company intends to leverage this massive vehicle fleet to gather extensive driving data. Hyundai anticipates that by 2033, it will outpace all its industry competitors in the volume of driving data collected. Furthermore, Hyundai is actively strengthening its alliance with Nvidia for broader technological initiatives, including autonomous driving development, AI data centers, and humanoid robots developed by Boston Dynamics.
