In line with these objectives, fish farming has emerged as a cornerstone of rural livelihoods in Sultanpur district, where a comprehensive fish insurance scheme has been introduced to shield fish farmers from unexpected operational and environmental losses.
Financial Protection Against Rains, Flooding, and Disease Outbreaks
Ramakant Pandey, Chief Executive Officer of the Fisheries Department in Sultanpur, highlighted that the newly launched fish insurance scheme aims to compensate farmers whenever fish stock is lost due to severe weather or illness. Prolonged rainfall, severe flooding, waterlogging, and aquatic disease outbreaks often lead to large scale fish mortality in local ponds, creating heavy financial setbacks for aquaculture workers. The new insurance policy acts as a safety cushion against these unpredictable hazards.
Registration via UP Fish Farmer App and Shared Premium Structure
Fish farmers can enroll in the insurance program digitally using the UP Fish Farmer App. The insurance policy structure, coverage amount, and terms are calibrated according to the dimensions of the pond and the species of fish being cultured. To ensure accessibility for small scale farmers, the premium payments are shared between the government and the fish farmer. The farmer pays only a minor fraction of the premium cost, while the government subsidizes the major remaining portion.
Personal Accident Cover of ₹5 Lakh for Fish Farmers
Apart from safeguarding aquatic crops, the scheme extends a crucial social security net by offering personal accident insurance to the farmers themselves. In the event of an accidental death of a registered fish farmer, the insurance provider releases financial compensation of 5 lakh rupees to the surviving family members. Since the inception of this initiative, accident insurance policies have already been executed for 1,305 fish farmers across Sultanpur district.
Scale of Aquaculture and Annual Production in Sultanpur
Fish farming is carried out on a significant scale across Sultanpur district. Aquaculture is conducted in community ponds across 2,673 gram panchayats as well as in 508 privately owned ponds. The sector sustains 3,181 registered fish farmers along with thousands of other local residents involved in harvesting, transport, and supply chains. Sultanpur yields an annual fish production ranging between 25,000 and 30,000 tonnes, underscoring the necessity of protecting this valuable output through insurance.
