A horrific incident in Nagpur involving a 16 year old girl has sparked a nationwide debate regarding internet safety and mandatory identity verification. Cybersecurity experts and community members emphasize that requiring mandatory e-KYC for accounts on platforms such as Facebook and Instagram could effectively deter individuals who use fake profiles to commit heinous crimes. Meanwhile, the young survivor remains in hospital, battling for her life.
The Nagpur Incident and the Misuse of Social Platforms
The tragedy originated from a fraudulent profile created on social media. An individual used a false name and fictitious identity to establish an account, subsequently targeting the daughter of an official in Nagpur. After initiating contact through the platform, the perpetrator built a relationship of trust over several conversations. Having gained her confidence, he invited the 16 year old minor to meet, whereupon he trapped her inside a flat. The victim was held hostage for over 24 hours, subjected to physical violence and severe sexual assault. The crime came to light due to the alertness and swift judgment of a pizza delivery worker, who alerted authorities and enabled the suspect's arrest. The victim was rushed to the hospital, where she continues her treatment, while the event has reignited calls for strict account verification.
How Mandatory Social Media e-KYC Would Function
The proposed e-KYC framework for social media operates similarly to the identity verification processes used for bank accounts and LPG utility connections. Under this system, any individual attempting to register a new profile on Facebook, Instagram, or other network platforms would be required to validate their true identity using government issued identification documents. Users would need to submit credentials such as an Aadhaar card, PAN card, Voter ID, or Passport to verify their profile. By binding accounts to legitimate personal credentials, the system aims to dismantle the anonymity that enables fraudsters to operate with impunity.
