French President Emmanuel Macron has conferred the prestigious Chevalier de l'Ordre National de la Légion d'Honneur, or Knight of the National Order of the Legion of Honour, upon Bharti Enterprises Founder and Chairman Sunil Bharti Mittal. The honour recognizes his sustained commitment to strengthening bilateral economic relations between India and France alongside his landmark achievements across telecommunications and digital infrastructure. Founded in 1802 by Napoleon Bonaparte, the Legion of Honour stands as the premier civilian distinction of the French Republic.
Three Decades of Bilateral Commercial Collaboration
Reflecting on the decision, French Ambassador to India Thierry Mathou highlighted that Sunil Bharti Mittal has maintained strong bonds with France for more than thirty years, dating back to Airtel's foundational phase in 1992. Over these decades, Mittal consistently nurtured economic collaboration, offering a prominent example of what business leaders from both democracies can accomplish when pooling technological expertise and strategic investments.
Today, that long-standing partnership extends into cutting-edge space technology and global satellite connectivity. Mittal currently serves as Vice-Chairman of Eutelsat, guiding joint ambitions at a juncture when both nations are expanding coordinated efforts across digital and space infrastructure. Ambassador Mathou noted that this enduring engagement showcases the depth of technological cooperation now taking shape between Indian and French enterprises.
Investiture Ceremony Scheduled at French Embassy in New Delhi
The formal investiture ceremony for the Knight of the National Order of the Legion of Honour is set to take place on October 28, 2026, at the Embassy of France in New Delhi. The gathering is expected to bring together senior diplomats, prominent industry leaders, and dignitaries representing both countries to mark the occasion.
Expressing his gratitude to the French Republic and President Emmanuel Macron, Sunil Bharti Mittal reiterated his commitment to deepening commercial integration between the two economies. Mittal noted that his relationship with France commenced in 1992 when Compagnie Générale des Eaux partnered with Bharti to introduce mobile telecommunications services in India. He highlighted that this collaboration remains as vibrant as ever through his current responsibilities as co-chairman of European satellite major Eutelsat, affirming that he will continue working to solidify economic pathways between both nations.
Distinguished Record of National and International Honours
This French decoration adds to an extraordinary portfolio of civilian recognitions that Sunil Bharti Mittal has received over the course of his entrepreneurial journey. In 2024, Britain's King Charles III conferred upon him the Knight Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (KBE), making him the first Indian citizen to receive the prestigious British honour.
Domestically, the Government of India conferred the Padma Bhushan, one of the country's highest civilian awards, on Mittal in 2007 in recognition of his transformative impact on Indian telecommunications and business leadership. With France's Legion of Honour, Mittal becomes one of the rare corporate leaders globally to have earned premier civilian honours from India, the United Kingdom, and the French Republic.
